I know many of you shoot weddings, portrait work, sports, etc. My question is more to the photographers that shoot the outdoors. I am curious what sales best and why? for example: in landscapes, there is a world to shoot, but do images shot of 'local beautiful landscapes' sell better than the great wonders of the world? Do images that include wildlife sell better than well composed shots without landscapes? Do shots of Autumn sell better than winter? etc. Love to hear some thoughts on this.

I only photograph landscape, nature and wildlife stuff. I wish I could tell you what sells! Things that I personally love...don't sell, yet things that I don't care for sells.

If someone is buying a print to hang in their home or office, They aren't buying a photograph. they are purchasing art. Call it what you want, art or photograph, it's all the same and very subjective.

There are no set rules on what sells or not, but you can have a guess at whatever market you are targeting eg. local people like local scenes, particularly in snow or other unusual conditions (the photographs of my local railway and level crossing in snow on my website are some of my most popular images). But remember it's all about the market, if you advertise amongst friends and family etc, then local people will visit. If you're interested in doing photos of the great wonders of the world then remember the competition will be a lot more fierce!

I have been researching this pretty heavily as I get ready to "go commercial" with my work. It seems that two particular emotions often drive purchases:
a) desiring an image that captures where they have been in life (destination or career)
OR
b) desiring an image that motivates them to where they want to go in life
...but I am sure images like macros of pretty flowers also works as these just take the mind to a peaceful place.
