I started photography with an old Voigtlander Rangefinder camera that belonged to my dad. My dad had a Pentax M42 SLR - Spotmatic F, I think, 135mm F2.8 Vivitar and Soligor 70-200, and later got a Nikon FM2. My first SLR was a Praktica B200 which I chose for its 1/1000-30sec shutter speed range. I added to that with my dad's 135mm Vivitar and a Hanimex 28-80.

I remember the birth of auto-focus SLR - Pentax with an AF lens and the Minolta 7000 and used to dream of the days owning a AF SLR. And then Canon came along with their EF mount. I remember that the Canon mount had no mechanical linkages between the lens and body. Other manufacturers still had aperture linkages and some even had the AF motor in the body to turn the lens.

It was the EF mount that hooked me into Canon.:D

It wasn't until 1999 that I bought my first Canon, an EOS-IX, the first APS SLR. In the Summer of 2003 I finally gave up on the APS format and bought a 300V. My intention was to use this for a couple of years until I could afford a digital SLR. I got my 300D as a Cristmas present for myself and my 300V consigned to my camera bag after less than a dozen rolls of film.

Now, my camera bag consists of a 20D, Sigma 18-50F2.8, Sigma 70-200F2.8, Canon 50mmF1.8 MKII, 550EX and 300D with kit lens. I still have my EOS-IX & Sigma 18-55F3.5-5.6 and 300V & Sigma 28-200F3.5-5.6, both ready for use!

Well, I was shooting with a little N***n 3xxx Coolpix and taking some pretty nice shots. But that camera was pretty limiting after about 4 or 5 months so I decided I was going to upgrade. At first I looked into the Olympus and N***n higher mp cameras and started to read all I could. Then I found fredmiranda.com and started reading there. Then I found POTN and I guess I was hooked. Canons innovations, lenses, price point, and product line led me right to the Dig Rebel (and the 20D shortly thereafter). I'm solidly hooked now :)

My Pentax SP from my college days was starting to show it's age and needed to be replaced. So, I bought a Canon AE-1 Program because I thought it was a cool camera back then. After 6 months I sold the AE-1 and upgraded to an even cooler A-1. In Christmas of 1998, my brother gave me a EZ compatible flash which only worked with an EOS camera which I did not have at the time. So I rectified the situation by going out and getting the Elan IIe. Then the 10D came along and I entered the digital photography age. :D :D :D

In my varied past I've had Agfa and Ashai Pentax Spotmatic plus various small film P&S. For many years my wife used a Canon Phototomic 35mm. An unusual camera that took beautiful pictures. I got back into photography with the advent of digital. First Kodak, then Minolta Dimage S304 (nice camera). Then my wife's Canon died & she replace it with an A70. I fell in love with the A70 so she gave it to me and got herself an A85. Now we were both hooked. Next I got her a Pro1 followed by a teleconverter, adapter & 420 EX. Less than a year after the Pro1 I got her a 20D & some lenses. A month later I couldn't stand it any more and got a 20D for myself. We are great Canon fans, even cases, and are not looking back.

I didn't really pick Canon....I was out on a cold afternoon and I happened to come in contact with another photographer and he was contagious and he passed on L Fever onto me, and I havent been able to shake it since. The only medicine my doctor precribes me is Canon glass, it worked temporarily but then I got addicted to the meds, and well.... Now im stuck with Canon forever.

Essentially because many years ago I went to an auction house and spotted a mint Canon A1 in a Canon ERC and got them for GPB 25. Two weeks later I returned and got an equally mint EOS 600 complete with Canon 28-70 and 70-210 EF lenses, 300EZ flash and holdall for GPB 60 - and I've never looked back since.

My first SLR was a Rebel 2000. I bought it because Samy's had a really good sale on it, including two lenses.

For my first DSLR,. I wantred a Canon from the moment the D30 was released..

For a few years I watched the Nikon's Fuji S1 and Canon's closely.. and had allready decided it was the Canon system I wanted..

But when the D60 was head to head with the Nikon D100,. I was really torn,. as the specs on the D100 were a tad better,. but I held my ground,. and decided to save up for a D60...

My hesitation was perfect,. as in waiting I suddenly found that Canon had released the 10D,. about $1,000.00 less expensive and better than all of the above. :)

When I was a student I used a Canon AE1 and then bought an A1 then an EOS 100 then bought TWO EOS 5 and many lenses covering 20 - 105. now bought a 300D but the funny thing is I havent sold any yet... for me it is the fact that Canon lenses focuses faster, bodies are easier to use oh and take any major sport event and look at the photographers on the field. All using big dirty white Canon L lenses hehehe I rarely see journalists use any other make.

For me, I had the aforementioned Minolta 7000. I saw a friend's G1. That was my first introduction to digital cameras. After some study, it came down to Canon's G2 and Minolta's comparible model. I chose Canon as the better camera.

After that, I had to sit down and think about what made sense for my SLR gear. Minolta at that time didn't have a DSLR, but you knew they would in a matter of time. Was my path Canon or Minolta? I had a camera of each. I could keep Minolta, but have a small Canon digicam. Or I could ditch my Minolta system (camera, flash, and two lenses - a modest system) , and start building a new Canon system.

I chose the Canon system for primarily two reasons. First, I felt that Canon was the leader in digital technology, and that this was the wave of the future. Second, the lenses that Canon had in their lineup fit me better than Minolta's. In fact, I could say that Canon's lens lineup is what really sold me in the end. If you look at lens performance, Canon's lenses are consistently the best (and yes overall that includes the N**** lenses as well).

For the same reason that I continue to buy Canon to this day: Price/features/ease of use.

I bought my first Canon in the late 60's when Pentax was emerging as "the camera to have". As a poor sailor I couldn't afford one so I checked out Canon and got hooked. The only time I diverted from that was when I purchased my Nikonos for underwater photography.

after some research in 1996 I though the canon EOS5 was the best camera at my price range on the market, and stayed there eversince

I had used Konica SLR film cameras for over 25 years, and then suddenly my standard lens failed, and a replacement lens was going to be very difficult. I thought about it for a couple of days, but I had to think fast, because I was leaving for an international vacation trip in less than a month. I opened up an Outdoor Photographer magazine, and there was some article or some ad for Canon SLR film cameras. Since I needed something lightweight, the Canon EOS Rebel G was the choice. That was around 1997. Once I had a few EF lenses under my belt, and when it came time for a D-SLR, then the Canon D60 was the choice.

The first "real" camera I ever owned was a Canon TLb; I think I was 14 or 15. My brother had bought an F-1 (for a whopping $460) when he was 14, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps the best I could.

I found that Canon gear just seemed to be a bit more intuitive than others. You could grab a Canon and go take decent pictures without having to read the instruction manual (which I've always hated doing). Through the years, when I was buying another camera, I'd always look at Canon; FTb, T50, Rebel. No other brand really interested me much.

When I bought my first digital (well, my first three), they were all Olympus P&S models. When I decided to buy a DSLR, though, I think it was natural that I looked at Canon again.

My wife has my last Olympus, and my daughter has a Powershot SD110. I'm using the 300D. I also still have my old FTb, my daughter still has the Rebel, and my Mom gave me my step-dad's AE-1 after he passed away.

I dunno'... sticking with Canon has always seemed to just make sense...

Because it had a dial on the Rebel G which was a big selling feature for me over anything else. I actually bought my first SLR because I had some money that I didn't know what to do with, so I bought a used Rebel G (for a rip off) price of $300.

I over paid for it. But it was an alright camera despite the RED EYE!

It seemed like a natural. Many many moons ago I borrowed a friends Pentax screw mount camera for a weekend. I was hooked. I bought my first Canon SLR and never looked back. To be honest, N***n has never ever entered into my thought process on making my own purchases. My wife did buy me a Nikon P&S digi a few years ago but that has since been handed down to my son. I've had several medium format cameras over the years but when it came to 35mm, Canon just seemed like a natural fit for me.

I chose to buy a Canon because a local store had a G5 (the only one left from their old stock), and it cost exactly the amount I had in my savings. I'm thrilled with it.

You are not the first one who asks this question ("Why did you choose Canon"), if you do a search you'll probably find more threads on the same subject.

I had a Minolta camera a few years back, but sold it and got an EOS 30 (not a D30, but an EOS 30 - which is the non-US name of the Elan 7E). I switched to Canon mainly because I wanted a DSLR someday, and Canon has the best choice for the best price with regard to DSLRs and lenses (I like the Canon cameras better than Nikon and other competitors, and in my opinion Canon's EF lenses are better and cheaper than Nikon's lenses).

About six months after getting the EOS 30, I bought a 10D and I haven't used the EOS 30 very much since. I'm going to upgrade my 10D when there's going to be a 11 or 12 MP successor to the 20D.

I made the jump from manual to auto focus (Pentax MX to Canon EOS 1N) I grew a stable of lenses so I guess we are now married.

For me, it was the Canon D60.
At the time I bought it, there was no competition (okay there still is almost no competition to Canon)

Although I technically had a Canon AV-1 film camera, that was not a camera to recommend people to Canon. The Canon D60 was the first DSLR that met my needs at the time for a digital SLR.

And although I almost went Kodak SLR/c there for awhile, Canon came out with the 1DsMkII before I gave in.

Funny how many here were originally Pentax. I had two Spotmatics and then one of their later ones (cant remember the model), then went over the the dark side (N Oink), Film and and then Digital. I borrowed a D30 for a days shoot and was a convert. Canon ever since.

I picked up photography with a Nikon (<- see that, Tom ?:-P) CP990, which was a pretty good camera at its time, it sold for about $1000 new. When the 10D was introduced, a friend bought one and explain to me all the good stuff that SLR cameras offer (the lenses, the focus, the viewfinder, the sensor size, etc...) and in the same time let me check it out for a few hours. It was quite expensive though so I couldn't afford one. Some time later, after the 300D was introduced i happened to lose my Nikon, and decided to buy the digital rebel and sell all my Nikon stuff that I had remaining (a couple SB-24 TTL flashes, TC lens, and some other crap).

That was the beginning for me as far as Canon... Then I joined this forum, and that was the last time I had money :-P

I bought a drebel when they first came out. A DSLR for less than $1000 was what allowed me to pull the trigger. Before that, I was drooling over 10D's and D100's and thinking I'll never buy one.

BTW, it cost me arm and leg because of my Nikon D70 converting to Canon.....I will never do that again. Will always stay with Canon.

Actually, back when I was in college ( I say back, but itreally wasn't that long ago) and decided to take some photography classes and work for the school newspaper, I asked my brother to use his camera, an early 80’s Pentax, but he said that it was having problems. So I called up my uncle who I knew had a camera or two that he didn’t use and asked him. He sent me a Canon AE-1. I used that camera through college and then after college sent it back to him and bought a Canon Elan IIe. I haven’t looked back since.
