Here are a few I shot at our last race of the season. I think i am definetely improving, but one thing I noticed with these shots when going through the EXIF was that several times I had the ISO as high as 400, but the AP was around f8 in some cases. I shot these in TV, so that is what the camera ended up using to expose it correctly with a 250 shutter speed. Have I got all that correct?

In the future I will step the ISO down when I notice this happening. I had read that most lenses 'cannot' auto-focus from around f8 and smaller... I had never heard this before. Is this more of a case of not auto-focusing WELL, or just not being able to grab the image cleanly? It certainly seems like the AF is at least trying to work at these apertures.

Am I on the right track with this?

Critique please...

I think the focus on your first two shots looks fine. The rider is nice and sharp.

You could improve your composition if you leave a little room in front of the bike.

Also watch your background, the fences don't do much for the photos.

I knew my comp was a little off after downloading these, I guess now I get so focused on the 'mechanicals' of it all I forget to consider composition. Hopefully the mechanicals will become second nature with time.

The fences suck, I agree, but they're practically everywhere at this track.
