I shot an interview with the 5D today having just sold the XH A1. I used the 85L, 35L and 16-35L and even wifey was impressed. To say the image is sharp is an understatement.

Only downsides from first real attempt at using in a pro environment is that getting a consistently perfect focus is hard and having control of the aperture is a puzzle. I'll find a way to cover that but wow, this machine re-defines film making.

The inconveniences using this over a standard camera are well worth dealing with to get such breathtaking quality. It seems every bit Broadcast quality.

interviews are a perfect application for the 5d, because you don't have to zoom... just back it up with a few cutaways.

i was recently impressed with some 5d footage, if you look through all 6 of these videos, you'll see how professionals set up the 5d & the red camera with focus pullers and such, it's pretty complicated:

It exceeds broadcast quality.

It exceeds broadcast quality.

Exactly how does one "exceed" broadcast quality?

1080p is 1080p whether it's from a 5DMkII or a Sony or Ikegami broadcast camera.

Do any broadcasts come in at 30 mbps and 30 fps 1080p AVC? Our OTA broadcasts are typically MPEG-2 at 1080i 30 fps or 720p 60 fps. But the MPEG-2 is a killer.

Beats the heck out of me as I'm an EVS Operator and not a video guy but I've never heard anyone say something exceeds "broadcast quality" when the comparison is between X and a Sony camera like this:

OK, I see. I interpreted "broadcast" as what's sent out by the provider (e.g., TV stations). I only have the antenna on the top of my roof for my broadcasts.

Ah, gotcha...

I happen to work at the originating end of things:

But like I said, specific numbers escape me as I left broadcast camera tweaking behind many, many years ago when they still had pickup tubes.

Broadcast as in what comes to your TV from the broadcasters. :)
1080i is the highest they send to your home right now.

It exceeds broadcast quality.

Whatever it is technically, my wife described it as a fantastic photograph that moves. Summed it up very well :)

FYI, I think my dvr-ms files, which are Microsoft Media Center recorded OTA TV files, are around 14,000 kbps which is around 15 mbps and that is either 1080i or 720p.

And you call me OLD!! How is Farnsworth or was it Marconi?? lol

I do think that the 5DMkII will set the video set on it;s ear, and I am wait to see major productions with it just to see how good it gets!!

Philo Farnsworth? He invented the TV. Marconi was radio.

You know echo, because of the aperture thing, I've always thought that an old manual focus lens with an aperture ring would be PERFECT for use on the 5D Mark II.

That's why people are using non "g" Nikon lenses with a Nikon to Canon
adapter.
A guy named Dan Chung has samples here:

Laforet is using ND filters to force the aperture open.
Here's a video link that talks about ND filters:

Another way is to do a stop down metering and then covering up the contacts.

Yup, older Nikon lenses would fall into the category of lenses I'm talking about - I have a Nikon to EF adapter, and some of the old Nikon lenses are very nice. Having an aperture ring is handy, and it's a nice excuse to buy some of that incredible MF glass that's out there.

Leica R APO 90 f/2, Voigtlander APO Lanthar SL 125 f/2.5, Nikon 50 1.2, Rokkor 58 1.2, Zeiss glass - all these terrific lenses come to mind that would take on new life on a 5D Mark II :D.

...or any other manual aperture ring glass. My Carl Zeiss lenses work great with a simple adapter, although f1.4 is verging on the ridiculously shallow DoF :-)
