My girlfriend just bought me a external hard drive and it says on the box that it is the windows preloaded version.

Can this model be formatted for mac?

Then why did they make a "Mac" version.

The Mac version does have a firewire 800 port, but i have a laptop so it doe sent really matter to me.

What is the best way for it to be reformatted?

Just go to the disk utility, highlight the drive, and select erase. I assume the Mac version is just pre-formatted.
