i got mine on amazon, as the official joby site was going to cost me half the price of the gorillapod in postage.
www.joby.com is the official site.

I was thinking about getting something like this for doing landscapes on rocks and stuff (of course keeping my hands close in case of sudden waves... evil pirates...).

Maybe a bit better than lugging a tripod around all the time (I mainly go for worm's eye view angles a lot of the time so this sort of thing might be cool).

How stable is it?

these things are very stable. At least the biggest one. The cool thing about using them in the field is that you can fasten them to a tree trunk or a light pole or whatever that is thin enough to wrap the legs around.

there are a few different models, mine is the gorillapod zoom, i looked at the slr version, but its max weight is 0.8kg, which is quite small when you consider that most bodys weigh 0.5kg. the zoom can hold 6kg
Its still on the armchair..i put it there like 2 hours ago.
lots of movement on the couch. and it hasnt fallen off
its as stable as u you make it.
its designed for the legs to wrap around things, so its most stable when they are curled around another object. when i was deciding on this, i searched it on youtube to see it in use. there was people who put them on fans and turned them on, on their motor bikes etc.
im still cautious about putting it on high objects, using the neck strap as sort of a harness incase it falls off, but as i use it more, i will have more confidence in using it

According to their website the slr-zoom can hold 3 kgs and the "focus" can hold 5 kgs....

hmm, the only one of these I ever had was a bit of a let down. After about a week or so the ball joints lost their stiffness and they were unable to support the camera. I think I just got a dud, oh well.

Sure it was an original? Also, I know the "ligther" ones are not so great quality.

Yup. it was new, packaged, bought in store and it was NOT one of the lighter ones for P&S's.
