(UK) Looking for a Canon fit flash gun

I want to start getting into flash photography and am not entirely sure where to start. I will be learning and putting this to regular use whilst working for my university paper so it needs to be a decent model with useful features. Not entry level. I would like to try off-camera flash so a cord or wireless option may be considered too.

I'm thinking Canon 430/580, Sigma 500/530 sort flash guns but I am open to ideas.

I'm in London but am willing to accept postage from the UK only please.

The sigma gun is very good and u can pick them up for about £60 these days.

I've found a used EX 550 for about the same price as a new EX 430. Does that sound good? I'd rather get cheap but good, and 2nd hand means if I change my mind I won't lose money.
