Ok, contest number 23 in the series, at 3 weeks a contests that’s over a years worth, so here is something a little different, and hopefully a little challenging, especially for the DSLR users :)

Your theme is "is" the word.

Come up with a descriptive word, and use a photograph to show it.

For example, you might like the sound of "Hairy" so you would take a photo of something that is hairy, and your photo would be titled "Hairy is:"

You could use anything, Love, Hate, Life, Death, Speed, it could be an emotion, or something more tangible, just as long as you can illustrate it with a photograph :)

This contest is about self expression, you will need to use your technical and creative skills with a little imagination. But it also allows almost total freedom in terms of subject matter. You could post a nude or a landscape, and both could represent the same thing.

Don't worry about someone else choosing the same subject either; I’m sure you will both represent it in different ways.

Judging will be by the usual method, voting either in a poll, or in a post depending on how many entries we get.

But I ask that when you do vote you consider how well the photo reflects the title, but don't forget technical aspects as well, or the all important wow factor :)

Now, some Contest specific rules, because I’m mean and cruel and nasty

Camera Limits: If you have a compact capable of manual control of both shutter speed and aperture then please use it instead of a DSLR.

And use JPEG only, no RAW for the G/S series users.

If you have more than one DSLR, and no compact that fits the above, then please use the lowest spec DSLR.

If you are going to use a DSLR:

JPEG Only :p

No L Glass unless its all you have

Nothing longer than 100mm, and nothing shorter than 17mm focal length.

Please try and use the kit lens if you still have it :)

Please limit aperture to between F2:8 and F8, and shutter speed to between 15sec and 1/1000th.

And please limit use of studio lights, no actual limits, but keep it in the spirit of the competition.

The idea here is not to hobble SLR users, or to put limits on how creative you can be, but to put an emphasis on composition, to challenge your creativity, and test just how well you do know your equipment.

SEND PHOTOS TO: ahales at xtra co nz

Note: Please allow up to 48 hours for your photo to post. If it is not posted within this time frame please send me a note via this forum.

TITLE all e-mails "Is." If the e-mail subject is not titled as such, I will not open the attachment and you will not be entered into the contest!

Please submit photos in the format "username_0x.jpg", where x is the number of the submission (i.e. 1 or 2).

Please submit a TITLE with your picture along with the DATE it was taken, and SPEED/APERTURE/ISO.

Your title should be your subject.

Additionally a brief explanation if needed to emphasise how this photo meets the theme.

Anyone can enter this contest. It is not so much we have these in the spirit of competition, rather we have these contests to challenge ourselves and to give ourselves motivation to take pictures that we might otherwise not do. And in turn learn and grow.

RULES

1) The contest will run for two weeks and will end on Sunday 3rd April, 2005 at 12:00AM GMT.

2) You can submit up to two pictures, and change these if you wish up to the time that the competition ends.

3) Photographs must be taken by you during the two-week period of the contest.

4) Post processing - nothing that substantially changes the original composition of the image.

5) Photos must be no larger than 800 pixels at the longest dimension. Also, please try and keep the file size down to under 300k if possible to make viewing the gallery easier for modem users.

6) No framing of pictures, text or copyright notices.

7) At the end of the competition, a separate thread will be started to seek the votes of forum members over the period of 1 week. The person with the most votes will be declared the winner.

Please be patient with me if it takes one or two days for me to get submissions posted.

And please feel free to ask any questions, whine or moan about the rules, or plead with me to change any, just in case my lack of DSLR knowledge has in fact made it impossible for DSLR users.

Especialy since its Easter, which means holiday time down here, which may conflict with peoples shooting plans?

Ok, I have one entry.

And it only just came in with in a few hours of the dead line.

So, is there anybody else interested in which case it can be extended, or should I just declear the only entry the winner and move on?
