Just bought a Speedlite 580ExII and attached it to my 1Ds MkIII. When I try to activate the Speedlite through the camera menu "External Speedlite Control" it gives me this message for the Flash Function Settings:
"Attach a Speedlite with functions controllable from the camera. Turn Speedlite's power switch to <ON>."
Well the Speedlite is attached and On and the flash fires when I take a picture but I can't access any of the flash options from the camera eg ETTL.
I've turned it off and on several times. I've taken it off the camera and re-attached several times. I've cleaned the contacts on both camera and flash. Nothing works.
Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Just a wild guess but try pressing down on the flash head so that the flash is pressed harder into the hotshoe. Maybe not all the pins on the flash foot is making contact with the hotshoe terminals.

Make sure that the locking lever on the flash is swung fully to the left, before attaching to the camera. Without moving the lever, press down on the flash and see if the menu comes up. If it does, lock the lever and see if the menu stays up.

Working in a camera store, my first suggestion would be checking the camera for dirt on the hot shoe contacts. Also check the flash. A pencil eraser works best.
