So although I have been a travelling working photographer for a long time I have stayed away from weddings, now that I am settled and in one place I am starting to get people asking me to shoot theirs, I'm unsure if I'm comfotable with it, so will do these ones this year and see how I go. Anyway, here's some images from my first one in oh so long! A lot of mistakes, all learning curves, but they were happy with the results, they did say though that my photography was very different compared to others and probably wouldn't be everyones cup of tea. so here are a couple... let me know what you think
cheers
Mark

They are great Mark, the 1 thing I would suggest to you is they are probably over processed which for something such as a wedding may not be the best. For model shoots and other stuff I have seen you shoot its great, but maybe cut it back for weddings. And remember ... this is coming from the King of heavy processing :) Shots are great though! Very interested to see your next few once you area tad more comfortable!

cool, great feed back everybody, thanks a lot!
yeah maybe your right, I'm thinking you mean the ones that are processed heavily. 6,7 & 8 are pretty much straight from cam, but the others have work. I need to work out a way to process for weddings where it is slight adjustments that are hard to tell, but give the image wizz. Mostly I think I need to push the creativity in camera more rather than with processing, ie using dof, slow shutter etc. It'll come I think over the next few, problem is i have the images in my head I want to create and work out how to create them, then on the day I forget about doing them and can't think what to do, i suppose that comes from doing the commercial work and model shots where it is thought out and created. I need to be more spontaneous and creative at the time of shooting. Hopefully that will come. I'm looking for a 17-55 2.8 IS at the moment so my main lenses will be that and the 70-200 2.8, it seems no one in NZ has one though! another thought is that these prcessed types is why they're hiring me, because they've seen my work thats processed like this. I think its a balance thing, i just have to find that right balance.
saying the images are 'iffy' is a little worrying though;-)

Oh def do a few processed shots, but for the majority I think stick to the basics, USM, slight contrast tweak and maybe play with the sats a little dependign ont he shot.
Haha, I have that same problem, forgetign the shot I wanted, with my recent trash the dress shoot there were 2 key shots I totally forgot about untill I got home.. was pi$$ed off to say the least.

ahh ok, yeah there are a lot of simply processed images too from the wedding itself, the tears and laughter and bits and peices ;-).
I have about 700-900 images, break them down to 200 or so, then pick out 10-20 that get some kind of heavier processing, but I think you're right, the images speak for themselves so maybe I should not go so far with them, its a web of diverse creativities.
yeah, it's killer when you know they would've been good too eh :-)

Sorry if I offended or come out too strong! I meant that the others are not what you normally see. Some are blurred, oversaturated, or underexposed - not the usual wedding shots.
The blur is artistic in some, but 3 & 8 just look odd. Ghosting of the slightly moving person's head just looks 'eh.'
Just my opinion though - excellent shots overall.

thanks for explaining that for me :-)
yeah I agree with the ghosting, it seems to come out more in these rather than the larger versions, but you're right, it is there and needs work
thanks and thanks again for explaining your iffy :-)

the sun was setting over my left shoulder, I had a 580 with a shoot through umbrella camera right.

love number 1 & 7
2 & 5 need more POW to separate the couple from the bg
4 is nice
3 would be great except for the faint ghosting (blur is not smooth)
8 has too much blur on the couple, bride disappears
6 doesnt work i feel because the couple takes up the whole frame yet are black: if you were going for silhouette then you needed more sky/background to give impact, & if you were going for portrait then we cant actually see them at all

The most important thing is the bride and groom were happy, I am inclined to agree with somethingsimple's comments, but disagree about the tan line comment, I like them. A little imperfection often makes things perfect. :)

thanks, yeah they were happy for sure, I've had emails from all over the world, even a 'respect' from a commercial photographer that shoots for car companies in Europe, so I know they're no slackers, but still it's good to get feedback and i tend to agree with ss too, yeah you could be right, we can get too perfect i suppose eh.

I like them all, except for number 1 and 8. I'd like to see some shadow somewhere on that one. That said, I love the way you lined up the shoes with the dress. With 8, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. I'd like to see more of the bride there. However, otherwise they are very creative.

Hmm interesting comments, thank you. The window was directly opposite on the other side of the room. maybe i shouldv'e lowered the ambient a bit and bounced off the wall to the left, this could've added a bit of highlighting and shadowing. food for thought.
8-yeah I don't know either, we were pretty spent, I had the idea, but it wasn't connecting, my major fault was shooting with the flash off the camera, by shooting off camera i couldn't have rear shutter flash sinc. I was also a little scared to over power it with flash so it was backed off, a little more and it would've been a winner.... next time ;-)

Nice series...I love the sky in the 4th image...was this done in PP or did you take 2 images...with one exposing for the sky, etc....just curious...

Hi Anya,
I've included the image as it was original from camera for you so you can see the difference in regards to the pp. It was metered for the sky and also shot with 2 bare flashes (580 & 430) approx 2-2.5 mtrs each side of the camera set off with remotes. taken at 11.54am(4 minutes to midday)
I hope that helps, and thanks

I've never shot a wedding myself but I've seen a lot of quality work. I guess since you're rusty it could be the reason that they are not top notch. I've seen the idea for #8 from time to time, I think it could have been better if the models did not move.

thanks, I have a few more coming up so hopefully I'll fine tune them nicely. I think I need to back off a bit with trying to be out there and just shoot it. I need more finesse ;-)
