Used a torch to do this.

Couldn't decide which one I preferred, so I added all three to look at. :)

I think #2 is my favourite, but they are all really effective!

maybe try turning the torch on and off out-of-frame?
Its still a cool effect though!

Just trying to get the torch lighting the scene (fast left to right movements) was hard enough, very exhausting after 30 attempts.
The exposure was fixed at 5 seconds, and to try to turn the torch on and off would have made it even harder to get anything! lol...
