Sharon in Alabama wrote me that a snowy owl has been seen near me. Is there a best time to go looking to see if I can find it? Are they like the owls here who sit in trees all day long and hunt at night?

Karen I believe they hunt either day or night, when hunting in the daytime they seem to prefer high perches to survey the area, if they are resting in the daytime I have usually seen they on the ground, if it is a rocky area it might pick a spot on one of the rocks. A lot of our visiting snowies seem to pick breakwaters.

Thanks so much...I guess I will just drive over and see what I can find. I'm so used to looking up to see hawks it would seem strange to look down for an owl!! :) This is exciting, I have never heard of one around here but we have been having arctic weather.

Will do, Gary! Isn't this exciting? I just read up on the snowy and evidently they have been as far south as Texas and Georgia in the past. I never knew that! I hope it is still there!

I spot them on top of telephone poles more than anything else

I have to agree with dewitp's reply. Watch the tops of the telephone poles!
We have had quite a few snowy's (and Short eared Owl's) in the area for quite a while now here in upstate NY.
Most of the time they are spotted perching on phone poles.

I find that the most consistent locations are places that resemble the arctic. They seem to prefer rocky areas like breakwaters or rock jetties close to flat hunting grounds. They also show up on beaches close to sand dunes where there are lots of rodents. Flat, treeless locations are great places to find them.
