I think you need to find a better position for your next trip out, a corner with some sideways action always help or else some air shots would really help.

In the case of the 1st shot, if you are getting a blur, id ask were you panning, 1/320 seams ok for it but you need to start the pan, shoot and follow through like a golfer hitting a ball. did you have the focus to Ai-servo? but the conditions made it hard on everyone this weekend. not great weather for shots. are you coming up to Rally Ireland in a few weeks?

No , I wasnt panning.....settings were: ai-servo and h shooting mode.
The way i shoot: I point my camera at the place where car is expected..as soon it comes I start shooting....several shots as I said above I used H-mode.
About WRC....yes I'd like to go there.....will you be there? I could learn something from you :D

The only reason i ask is that i was getting the same results about 3 years ago when i started, and i found that if you are to pre focus on a spot, you need to take into account the distance the car will go inbetween shots to keep the car all in focus. 2 ways i know of doing this right.. there may be 100's of others (im no expert) but this is my 2c
1. set your apeture to f6+ so that you have a good DOF, however you will need good daylight to keep up the shutter speed, or you can up the iso. - this is a safe way of getting a sharp shot for papers etc, and i use this way for jumps. BUT you get a parked look when the car is on the ground :-(
2. keep about 1/320 f3-4ish and pan- not so safe and you might have to scrap some, but when you get it right, the car should be all in focus and a nice blur on the wheels and background=:-)photographer
Daylight and weather can change so your settings will too, i try and test my shots on the Sweeper cars and the 00's before the main field come through.
Ill know exactly where i should be on rally ireland later this week i hope, ill be there from thurs-sunday.
ill drop you a pm and let you know sure.

Unless you're using very high shutter speeds, shooting like you describe will just result in oof images - you have to develop and use a good panning technique for all motorsport photography.

Hi Magadima
As Rory said try and improve your panning, it will be hard at the start to prefect, start at 1/320 and as you get sharper shots keep dropping the shutter speed, go to a small club stage and get plenty of practice, yesterday was difficult so don't be to harsh on yourself. I was ISO 800 1/160 and f3.2for this shot balancing on a school wall:(, as you can see the some of the car is not in focus but I did get wheel blur.
