We have had lots of shots of Vancouver covered in snow from the recent snowfall, but where are all the fog shots from the last couple of days? These were handheld (no shivering allowed) from Cypress lookout mostly.
I know I am not the only one who snapped off a couple of shots: ;)

Only the tops of the towers for the Lions Gate Bridge, the tops of skyscrapers and construction cranes peek through the fog:

The afternoon sun starts to burn off the fog

Thanks for the kind words.
I was heading up to do a little snowshoeing on the mountain, and I was there just after the road up the mountain opened up at 7 am. I was stunned to see that many photographers already set up when I got there.
The other shots were taken later in the day on the way down the mountain - just as many photogs then too!
One more shot showing the bridge towers and some tree tops in Stanley Park:

Nope. The fog results from a temperature inversion, which happens a couple of times every winter. When I left the mountain, it was 9 deg C at the top, but only 2 deg C in the city under the remaining fog.

Again, very cool.

Nice stuff, Tony. I figured it'd be good to head up Cypress during all this fog but just didn't have the time to get there.
What lens were you using?

4, 6 and 7 were shot from just off Chippendale in the British Properties - away from the crowd . 4 is not cropped - 6 & 7 cropped a little bit to remove the tops of a couple of trees in the foreground.

Very cool indeed. I guess I must venture up to Cypress myself and fight for a spot. I never knew about that lookout until now.

Nice pics! I was up on Burnaby mountain on saturday for sunset. There were quite a few other people up there taking photos too. Downtown was a little far away, but I got a few nice ones of the taller buildings in the Metrotown area poking up through the fog.

LOVE that Sunrise shot!!!
While it was foggy in town, I headed out to Squamish in the sun to find the Eagles. On the way back in, around Porteau Cove, the sun was setting into the fog and everything was ablaze! Unfortunately I was late already (too much time shooting in Squish) and couldn't stop for a shot... Wife was already unhappy when I got home

In the '70's we'd go up there to watch the submarine races. :) Many a virgin went up, very few came back down the same way....

How was it? That's another thing that's been on my list but hasn't been accomplished this year because of the weather...
Tony, I had time to head up to West Van today. I followed your suggestion of Chippendale - there's some nice houses around there! Anyway, I got a couple of shots, nothing as good as yours though.

I stood on the high brick fence of one of them fancy mansions to get the shots... much to the amusement of a large woman walking a very small dog. I should have got a shot of her and posted it in the 'street photography' thread.
Feel a bit funny standing high on a fence shooting a stranger from a couple of feet away with the 70 - 200

I checked out the thread and the ones you have posted on the other site. I'm excited to get up there! Wish I hadn't sold the 1dIII, it would have come in handy using the 1.4x and getting centre point autofocus with the 100-400.
How close can you get? Oops, threadjacking in progress.... Answer that on your thread. :)

Great series of photos! I keep meaning to shoot out at the airport with this fog, but am too lazy.

very nice photos. I was tempted to go up to cypress but I don't think my kit lens or my nifty fifty would be very suitable. I did manage to snap this next photo with the fifty though:
ps: couldn't see more than about 20 metres ahead of me while on the seabus.

We had a high pressure area come in and trap a zone of moist marine cloud underneath it. When the area cooled - condensation.
We have finally had enough breeze to force the fog away and we've got BLUE sky again!

So, when that happens, is it just dark on the street level?
I'd be interested to see that angle.

Here's one blogger's view on it: http://livinginvancouver.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/what-the-fog/
It's a bit dull and depressing.

Sam,
Here's one from the evening looking at one of the Lions Gate Bridge towers.
It's not all doom and gloom, it's all in how and what you shoot. Vancouver is known for it's strange weather though. We've had 20 days of rain, then 20 days of snow and now 20 days of fog. Now we'll have a couple of absolutely stunning days to take away the pain and make us forget how crappy a winter it's been.
There are more fog shot on my flickr page rather than stealing Tony's thread again. :) All but the last three on the first page are in the fog.
