30d with cybersync trans + 380ex with zebra shoe adapter and cyber rec. (i understand this looses ettl and has no manual so will fire at full power?) + sunpack 383 with zebra adapter and cyber rec.(may have pc port, not sure? and has manual so i can manually adjust power but no ettl?)

i can add a 550ex or 580 ex master later, but with cybersync it would not matter anyway correct?

i can use dedicated slave flash with built in optical trigger that run on batteries or screw into a regular light socet to play around with for a little fill flash?

would i be better off selling the 380 and getting a 430? or should i forget all of this and get a master and the sunpak 383 as slave?

a master uses IR and not flash to set off slave correct? i decided i dont want optical and would rather have something that only my camera can set off. would rarely be somewhere that someone else would have a canon slr and competing with the 550ex as master.

thanks.

Personal experience, a power adjustable flash will be more versatile than a fixed power one. I use softbox or umbrella and can move the light source very close to my subject and dial down the power. That'll create a softer lighting and maintain details.

Using the 380EX as a off camera flash is like use a 50mm lens with only f8 aperture setting. It limits you on what you can do rather than helping to be creative, plus the master 550 or 580 can not trigger it, and recycle time is about 5 second after each full discharge. So I would say keep it as the on camera ETTL flash or with off shoe cord for macro works, but get something else for off camera.
