Hello all, I'm new to the forum, so please forgive me if this is being posted in the wrong place...

I'm about to dive into the photography world (more than I am now anyways, I'm using a Canon S110) and I could really use some help on deciding which camera to invest in.
I will be shooting mainly indoors (models with fixed lighting), but I would also like to be able to do some nice outdoor & night shots (the models are more important though). My main request is that the image quality be superb and high-res. I would really like to be above 3000x2000 as they will all be thrown into Adobe and/or printed.
The reason I posted in this forum is because I'm currently looking into purchasing the D60. From the samples I've seen and the testimonials I've read, it seems like a well rounded camera that can do what I want.
Please don't flame me on this one, but when purchasing the D60, the lense isn't included is it? If this is true, what lense would you recommend?
As with most people, I'm trying to get the best product/quality for the most modest price. Any help will be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Hi Kraix,

The D60 should do you well. It dosn't come with any lenses, but this is a good thing as it lets you choose which lens or lenses you want to team it up with.

As which lenses to go for, a prime for the studio work will be a good choice and the 28-70 2.8L (or the new 24-70 2.8L) for the outdoor/night shots.

I know L glass is quite expensive, especially if you are building up a new SLR system from scratch but it is worth it.

All I have to do now is to sell my 28-135 IS so that I can practice what I preach ;-)

Kraix,

How deep are your pockets? :)

As Pat said, if you can afford it, go for L lenses. The difference in image quality is substantial, whether you want to pay for it is up to you.

Indiviudally, prime lenses will be cheaper and, if you choose carefully you can get good quality in non-L. Here's my suggestion for top picks in primes - all are Canon EF lenses:

20mm f/2.8
50mm f/1.8
85mm f/1.8
135mm f/2 The only L lens in this list.

I have all these except the 85, so I have, by and large, put my money where my mouth is. :)

There is nothing wrong with the 28-135 IS lens on the D60. The range is awfully useful, and IS saves shots you'd lose. If you only buy one lens for the D60, I'd strongly recommend the 28-135IS. I also have the 16-35 and the 100-400, but for walking around the 28-135 lives on my body.

Hi kraix

You'll love the D60. Its one of the best decisions I made. I sold my G2 (after four months) and bought the D60 in July. You have been given good advice on lenses here already but I'll add my two Aussie cents worth. I bought two lenses while awaiting my D60. The one which rarely leaves my camera is my 28-105 which is an inexpensive lens. But the one I love dearly is my 70-200 f/4L - my one and only L lens. You can check out a Canon survey of lenses at http://www.cmpsolv.com/photozone/resultEOS.htm

Cheers and happy shooting
Sheila

Hi Dan,

I never ment to imply that there is anything wrong with the 28-135 IS, especially if it is stopped down a bit and yes, the IS has saved me more times than I can remember.
