Flash Exposure Compensation. Hit the button with a little lightening bolt on it, then dial it down.

If your internal flash is already at its maximum, then your best bet is to crank up the ISO of the camera. That effectively gets you more flash range, even though you really are not changing the flash.

Bob, he said decrease the intensity. Raising the ISO will have the same effect as increasing the intensity/brightness of the flash.
Another way to get less light in is to use a narrower aperture.

Check out Canon. You can download the 20D owner's manual in PDF format.

The great thing about PDF is that you can do a search for the topic you want.
It's so much faster than flipping thru pages. :)

Elle,
As you increase/decrease the Flash Exposure Compensation as described bu Tim above,.. there is an exposure meter very much like the one in your viewfinder on the 20D's top LCD.. But this one shows your Flash metering.. there you will allways see if you have FEC set, and where it's set to.

You're right. I've never heard of anybody trying to decrease the intensity, only increase it.
The light will decrease automatically, down to one meter. Beyond that, you're on your own. You could simply put a heavy diffuser over the flash tube. The metering will see that effect from the pre-flash and try to goose it up some, but it can only go so far.

I always decrease the intensity of the flash because I almost always use it as a fill.

So do I very often (more than increasing, which I do with a 550ex ;) )
