View Full Version : Smashing Pumpkins: Dallas

These are from the Smashing Pumpkins concert in Dallas of 2007.
They allowed digital cameras in on that tour so I brought in my Canon Powershot A620 which is a P&S camera but it has a good amount of manual options. I tend to stick to manually adjusting white balance, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focus (unfortunately all controls are digital). I did not have a photo pass but I did get to the concert early enough to be right up front in the pit. Well technically right behind my tiny fiance, who was against the barricade. Any feedback is always appreciated. One thing I was worried about was punching up the ISO too high that I figured it might start causing some distortion on this camera. So other than that I, worked the aperture and shutter speed. Not surprisingly the came out still kinda dark. Though some like the darker shots while others don't.

Miscategorized. Should be in photo sharing, not talk.

Not awful for P&S shots, I have definitely seen people do worse with a DLSR. Would say that 3 is my fav.

whoops sorry about that

and also thanks, anything I can improve besides getting a dlsr? composition-wise?

Not bad for P&S, except very dark. Composition looks pretty good, try not to cut off hands (#4). And try to number your pictures when you post.

Some not bad composition wise.
All way too dark though (beyond a matter of taste IMO)

If using high ISO is what it takes to get the shot, use it. Clean up the noise in post if you have to... Well exposed at high ISO gives less noise then corrected underexposure on a lower ISO.

is there ever any reason to try to avoid higher ISOs in dark settings?

thanks for the tip on that

IMO, no.

Obviously, you'll use as low as you can, but mostly that's above ISO 800

You really can't with a p&s, not even the Fujis.

Usually not. The only time I could think of would be if your camera is massively noisy at high ISOs, but if it is, you're using the wrong gear. The most effective kind of camera for this kind of photography is a DSLR that has minimal noise at high ISOs. While there is such a thing as deliberately grainy artsy monochrome shots, that's not what bands usually want.

would a 50D be good at high iso's? i see it goes up to...is it 12600?

Thanks for the tips, unfortunately I think that camera goes only up to a pitiful ISO 400 and the quality at that level is pretty craptacular.

saw some of Rukes shots from December, which are awesome, though admittedly I really enjoy high contrast shots. But that I guess is probably best left to post?

guessing that's probably cause it is a US site
don't know why they wouldn't allow people from outside the US to access their site
does the whole site not work for you?
otherwise you might try this link for the full review http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a620-review/
the section on ISOs is about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the way down

Maybe this one works: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a620-review/nightshot400-crop.jpg

I'd call that "usable" by the way, with some NR.

interesting as I'm getting the same error you posted about with your link... that is until I went to the review itself from here (on different computer now)

what a fussy website

alright, have to learn more about how to really work with NR in Photoshop
