I really want to upgrade to a decent LCD monitor, but I'm still hesitant due to cost. What are the cheapest LCD monitors that are not TN displays? I imagine I have to look at monitors at least 24", which is fine, but I'm looking for a bargain... or at least looking to get an idea of what I will have to spend. Thanks in advance for the advice.

The HP LP2475w is a great buy for a H-IPS panel, and can be found for under $600. You defintely need to calibrate with something for a wide-gamut display (I use the Spyder3 Pro), as the colors are a little rich out of the box.

+1.

The HP LP2475w is a great display IMO, but a calibrator that can handle wide gamut displays is a must, both Spyder3 and Eye One Display2 fit the bill.

I just upgraded from a Spyder2 to the Eye One after having this display for about 3 months.

I got an HP LP2475 a few months ago, can't go wrong with the quality of this monitor, and the price is excellent.

Zephyr, that looks perfect. If you've got a good working knowledge of PC hardware, I might pick your brain again... I have a Dell Dimension desktop with an ATI Radeon X300 128MB video card, and I'm not sure it can even display 1920x1080. Do you know of a reasonably priced video card that can do this that would be compatible with my PC? This would not be for gaming, just mainly for Photoshop (and web browsing, etc). Thanks for any help.

Am I missing something? The tech specs clearly state this is a TN panel.

I knew it was too good to be true. I guess I'll stick with what I have. I'm actually going to run a DVI to VGA cable from my PC to my 27" LCD TV. Resolution will be 1360x768, which isn't as good as 1920x1080, but at least I've got the real estate on the wide screen. It's almost too bright, but pics look good, and I'll calibrate with Spyder2.

I think the link in this post (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7165883&postcount=1) is the "supposed" Dell 22" IPS panel, which actually costs $299.

I cannot find any confirmation though definitively stating that it is indeed and IPS display.

I misread another post, it is supposed to be the 2209WA, not the S2209W

This card would work for you as long as your machine uses a PCI-E slot.

this one has dual DVI ports to support 2 digital LCD's,

Post your computers model number and the tech specs if you know them.

Apologies to the OP for jumping in on this thread but I've been thinking about upgrading my monitors as well and could use the same advice.

Zepher, how reliable is this card? Some of the reviews on Newegg were not as positive. I'm trying to upgrade my Dimension 8400 to dual displays.Currently have an analog monitor and trying to weigh if it's worth going to 2 digital displays vs 1 digital/i analog.

Current sys config on Dell 8400 is:

Pentium 4 Prescott DT,3.4GHZ,1 MEGB 800FSB
ATI Radeon X300 128MB
2 GB DDR2 PC2-5300 240-pin DIMM RAM (Would like to upgrade to 4GB but am aware that only 3GB will be seen)

Appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

I ran duals with 1 analog and 1 digital for years, it was fine on my LG's, both screens looked identical.
I did a test with a 17" Dell and on that monitor you could see fuzziness and lack of sharpness when using analog.

I can't comment on the reliability of the card, but eVGA is a really good company from the experience I had when my 7800GS card was acting strange.

Does your X300 have a DVI and VGA port on it? If so, try it out first then decide on a card if you need to.

You have a point. I thought my card only came with VGA but it does have DVI-I as well. I'll just have to decide on a monitor then.
