Just curious about what others think about the self photographer; Asya Schween? People either seem to love or hate her work, rarely are they left unaffected. I'm a self photographer (as well as other styles). I tend to take mostly nudes of myself, most recently I'm concentrating on depicting emotion, through expression and/or body language. Asya Schween's work is very inspirational for me. I'd been trying to get my head around an idea for some time, using myself and my childhood dolls. Asya's work most closely resembles what I am trying to do, I've gotten a few good shots, and have many more in my imagination.

Anyway, what do you think of her work, whether positive or negative....

Not my cup of tea I admit,... I guess the most intuitive thing I could say about it,..

...is "Repetitive"

Your own work has much more "variety" and interest to me.

I think she might need some therapy :D

Ya I do think she's kinda repetitive - I would like to see her depict some positive emotions, but I think she's going for the whole goth thing.

Therapy, lol, I read an interview with her and she mentioned that people suggest that quite a bit. (come to think of it, it's been suggested to me as well...) lol.

Technically she's very good.

Themeatically - self obsessed springs to mind. It is interesting that a lot of her images include some form of 'abuse' either as a concept or by altering the nature of her face. I'd never heard of her until I read this link but I wouldn't stop in to a gallery displaying her works now that I have.

Strange how the images fall into two distinct categories, one featuring childlike behaviour (toys as props etc) and an adult theme. In almost all the adult themed shots she distorts her face in some way or masks it. In the childlike shots she doesn't. Must be something to that.

Creative & artistic but If start shooting like that send me to a shrink. :)

Some of those shots look like the type of pictures I take of myself when I'm playing with my wife's G3 camera and no one is around to see me making all those funny faces at the camera. Of course, when I'm done playing with the camera, I immediately delete all those picture lest they fall in the wrong hands and get used for blackmailing me.

BTW, it's boredom that drove me to take those pictures of myself, not a need to visit a shrink (at least, not yet!). ;)

I don't like it, what more is there to say?

Seems to me as an artistic version of the wannabe-special-teens you see sitting around posing with sad faces and taking snapshots of themselves with handy compact cameras.

Yuk.

Her work is certainly thought provoking and builds an image of how she might be to meet, an adult finding it hard to let go of childhood. I'm not sure if I like it, I certainly would not hang one of her pictures in the Lounge but I do think she uses images well to portray ideas. Technically they are superb.

Standard work for the young beginner. Trying too hard to be artistic but at least the technical part is good. When you can produce a variety of moods and emotions, then you will be ready for real world so keep working at it. Negatives and extemes are usually the easiest moods to work with and most people do start there.

She appears to have a lot of artistic talent. I don't like her work at all, but at least she's a capable artist.

She's ok... as far as mathematicians go.

I visited my friend last week. He's doing a PhD on polyfolds...

I found him on the stairs. He's sitting rocking(oscillating?) back and forth buck naked wrapped in a blanket. Trying to prove something.

Expression of self obscession is acceptance of it, the first step of therapy :)

I don't know, this type of art appeals to me because I tend to linger around my own dark side. I do think Asya needs to branch out, and maybe she will in time, but her current obsession doesn't strike me as 'crazy and in need of therapy'. I love art that is different. I love it when artists explore the other side of things, even if its really dark and dismal in there. I love art that causes the crowd to turn away in disgust, while a very few continue to look. There's a fine line though - artists who try too hard to be 'alternative' tend to expose themselves at some point, as gimmicky. I don't personally see Asya as one of these. Though I could be wrong, time will tell I suppose.

Boring. It's too artsy fartsy for my tastes and I feel I have seen it everytime I go to a student photography exibit at NAIT campus. I like real photography not photography of a girl that probably thinks she is too good for everyone in the room because she can take her picture. At least that is the impression I get of her. Just being honest. She takes good pictures but me personally, I am not crazy about her subject matter.

Interesting technique, but I wouldn't spend my $s on it. As a friend of mine used to say, "Sun comes up, sun goes down. World goes round & round. Ain't no big thang!" ;-)
Now, that Helmut Newton guy...

Sabina, you need to resize the photographs on your homepage. The library box is nearly 6 meg!

i'm surprised no one's mentioned that she's another cindy sherman. when you don't have a model, photograph yourself. she's more "out there" in the public view than I am so good for her.

buts its still a 1990s cindy sherman work.

i say a little bit of what everyone else is saying. though, i'm still learning how to look at things.
i would never portray myself in that matter but i like the collage look of her images but i'm not into that horror whatever thing she's doing.

i wouldn't bookmark her site nor look for her gallery shows but i'm at b&n and i came across an article in a photo mag on her i'd look at it then put it back.
