View Full Version : Celebrity Camera Ads - Arrrrgh

Im not sure that this really belongs in this section but I need to vent after opening up a National Geographic mag.
Im getting sick of seeing Canon ads on TV with Avril Lavigne saying its her style or whatever. I hate her with a passion. Always have. Why would Canon get HER to do ads for their cameras and lenses. One ad has her sporting a Rebel around taking shots of eveything pink and shes acting all wannabe punk. UGH! lol Makes me want to sell my camera for a Nikon just to stick it to Canon for their celebrity marketing.
Oh but wait. I open up my magazine and theres an even bigger douche 'Ashton Kutcher' sitting around a buttload of Nikon gear, boxes stacked on top of each other and Kutcher sitting in a chair holding a very nice camera.
So what audience are they trying to market here? Why not get some actual famous photogs or at the least a decent celeb like steven spielberg or somthing... or at least make the kiddy celebs hold point and shoots.
Anyways, I had to vent.

well the right answer is they aren't trying to appeal to you. They are trying to get the college age girl/guy who likes photos and probably has enough to cash to buy the " kit" that their idol/celebrity has in order to get good photo's at there parties. Then they buy it put it on the little green box and voila 10 zillion 20 something Ansel Adams/ Kutchers in the world.
The answer is cause if they got a real photographer no one would know who he is. and the fact that we are all talking about it has given them the branding that they desired.

Celebrity endorsements always sell things. Canon (and Nikon) are looking to attract the audience that wouldn't normally buy something like a Digital Rebel on D-40 kit by showing them that it's so cool that even (insert name of famous celebrity holding product here) uses it, and or course the next subtle hook is to plant the suggestion in your mind that if you buy one of those you'll be as cool as your favorite celebrity.
And let's face it, those ads aren't geared toward even the casual amateurs and beyond, they are aimed strictly at the snapshooters that don't know an f-stop from a bus stop.
And if I have to look at someone, I'll take the hot teenage trailer trashy bimbo over Ashton any day!!

If a stupid ad makes you want to sell your camera, then go for it ...cause you know everyone gives a damn who canon's marketing team uses to campaign their ads...but whatever, to each their own, personally who gives? Everyone in the world uses cameras..but to sell your canon for a nikon would be just retarded..cause then you gotta deal with Ashton Kutcher from nikon :D ...I love avril lavigne, I can't stand kutcher. Everytime I see him on tv I wanna punch him in the face through my TV. Ruined three good TVs doing that.
I think canon is targeting people who care about things like being manipulated by celebs in ads. I label these people "Idiots"
The world is full of them, so they must be attempting global conquest.
Then again every mass manufacturer (mcdonalds and beyonce, covergirl and queen latifah, tyra banks and proactiv, etc) out there uses celebs in ads to manipulate who you go with and why...and judging by this:
UGH! lol Makes me want to sell my camera for a Nikon just to stick it to Canon for their celebrity marketing.
It looks like canon's marketing strategy is workin in reverse, and now you want a nikon !
Maybe they're the same company using a double-duo marketing strategy (pepsi/coca cola is one singular entity that "competes" with itself to build brand loyalty).
Conspiracy conspiracy conspiracy...

Ehh, it's the Rebel series. Celebrities exude credibility to their target market. Do I remember someone writing in an article that Rebel cameras and EF-S lenses are targetted towards females and younger people? Well bam, and the marketing strategy is done! I do wonder though, gee as if they can do photography, they mostly appear in front of the cameras.
Personally I think ditzy actresses/singers need to be holding one of those credit card sized point and shoots, you know, to say how well it fits into their tiny designer bag with their pooch.

It's funny what getting celebrities to promote DSLRs does to the perceived affordability. If they are going after the mass market of casual shooters, it's detrimental to use celebs with more money than an average neighborhood combined to promote affordable cameras like XSi or D60.
I think the only camera commercial I like is the XSi football commercial.

Well obviously they just used a metaphor to liken the camera to a tennis great. Whereas, what "celebrity" skill could possibly be used as a metaphor to sell a camera? I can't think of any, the only thing I can think of is that the celebrities have credibility to the target market (as lame as that sounds, girls are probably falling over themselves to buy Nikon now), and lots of teenage emo kids will also be purchasing the Rebels.

Can't say I'm a big fan of Avril's music, however, she does write her own songs and everytime I've seen her live on TV it's really been live - not lip-synced. I even saw her sing before some MTV show a long time ago and the vocals were painfully out of tune. That's not good but at least she's really singing.
So, while I'm not a fan, at least she's not a Britteny Spears who just lip syncs songs someone else wrote.

That person also falls within my "uniformed/living under a rock idiot" category IMHO..if they're insisting young adults and females are weaker they need to get out and about. Lot of the young teenagers I'm seeing from 15-18 are doping creatine and roids, the kids today aren't going to have trouble carrying around a 10 lb box and lens attatchment. Females are statistically stronger than males, too, just less bulky.

As for avril, well I would do buy a camera if she told me to; she is lovely :) We dont get her adverts in the UK I wish we did!

Link?
Either way, this whole mumbo-jumbo talk on strength isn't too relevant, though. The person simply stated that the Rebel line targets younger/female audiences.. which is probably true. It doesn't mean he/she necessarily thinks women are weaklings.
Similarly, I'll assert that the xxD line targets semi-professionals and enthusiasts, rather than full-professionals. Does that mean I think the xxDs aren't meant to be used professionally? Of course not. I'm just making observations based on how Canon markets their cameras.

Yeah ok mate, I wouldn't have a hard time believing a female athlete is stronger than the average man. I don't have any problems carrying around a heavy camera, but it is certainly more noticeable to carry than a 400D with a kit lens. Not to mention, you could safely say the average person buying a camera isn't an athlete or gym junkie. Marketing this segment is about targetting the broadest market to make the most money. And hey, those kids that are going hard out on supplements to get maddd biceps probably can't afford the heavy cameras anyway.
Most people have used cameras before, but not large heavy cameras. Most people these days probably think camera = credit card sized compact. Hell people seem to think mobile phones are adequate enough. Stepping up to a 450D with a kit lens will be heavier in comparison.

Try being a camera salesman. Trust me, I've probably gone a little more crazy over this then most. Just ask my girlfriend. Ha! Before Christmas I literally would get this at least 5x a day- "Like, do you have the Ashton Kutcher camera?" When teenaged girls started coming in asking for the camera in droves, I really didn't know what they were talking about because I don't watch much tv. Then it just got out of hand. Nikon, I f'ing hate you for putting that d-bag in your ads. It truly made me want to smash your cameras. Especially the way overhyped, touch screen, S60. BUT, your little marketing scheme worked.
Those old Aggasi Rebel ads were great. He was the "bad boy" of tennis so the Rebel series suited him well. Especially when he was still rocking the long flowing locks. Hahaha

I guess they use big name celebrities because some people see that they have great talent in acting or singing or whatever they do and think, "Oh they must be AWESOME photographers, too!" So since that person can't sing or act they decide to get the camera the celebs promote so that they can be just like them.

Those were the good old days. When you as an advertiser would at least try to equate the skills of the endorser to the skills of the product.

Can you really blame these manufacturers though? As somebody pointed out earlier in the thread, a lot of photography novices are settling for what their mobile phones can do. This must have affected sales somewhat, so you can't really blame the manufacturers for trying to win back some of this market with some of their lower-end products. If Canon's overall market share suffered a massive slump, do you suppose they would be in a position to continue producing their higher-end cameras, which i should imagine sell in much smaller numbers?

Most of the people on this forum would view photography as art and probably buy equipement to match. The reality though is that Canon probably sells 1-2k SD1000 point and shoot cameras for every 5D MKII.
They are mass market products and use a mass marketing approach like Milley Sirus (SP?) or someone similar who the target audience will respond to. It is not selling out, it is mearly effectively marketing a product line. That is why you don't see some celebrity running around snapping pictures with a 1Ds MKIII during a superbowl commercial.

It's funny, I'm pretty sure the whole reason why it's called the "Rebel" is because of those ads with Agassi. And here we are, 20 years later, still stuck with the same dumb name....
In any case, I always thought that the ads with Agassi at least made sense. In my mind it was making a connection with sports photography -- if you wanted to capture high-speed sports like tennis, you needed a Canon Rebel SLR. That was always the connection in my mind at least. In that respect, I guess I wouldn't mind any sports star as a camera promoter, as opposed to a pop star or actor.

I honestly can not even begin to guess the number of people I've had come in to me asking for the "Ashton Kutcher" camera.
I'd say probably 10 a day, for 3 months.
Proof positive that the ads are working. I think some people are forgetting that Canon and Noink are profit driven companies, fighting fro every custoemr in this recession. They will do and should do everything they can to reach every audience they can...

Actually, to a non-photographer, "fast" glass doesn't make sense
But i dig the F1 driver idea, too bad F1 doesn't get enough audience in US to get an effective ad out of it

I am amazed that people are actually affected by marketing campaigns.
Does anyone actually look at the specs of a camera, or do they go on who's holding it, or how good it looks in an advert?
To get annoyed because some chick is holding the same camera that you saved up for is just stupid. And to think that you can "stick it to Canon" by selling your Canon gear is just hilarious.
Who really cares about adverts anyway. The camera Avril is holding is the same camera I have (450D) and I didn't bat an eyelid when I saw it. I know for a fact that it wont affect my photography, and I know for a fact that it wont persuade me to sell my camera.
Stop being so shallow. Would you change your brand of milk if some "douche" suddenly appeared in their marketing campaign? No. You are getting upset because the thing that you think is niche is being marketed to the general population and cheapened by celebrity endorsement. This is the world we live in unfortunately.
I don't want to seem like a grumpy guy, but when I read that people want to sell their gear JUST because some pop star is holding the same brand of camera, it seems a bit silly. It's like being embarrassed to be seen with something that Ashton Kutcher happened to hold in some advert. It's a camera for crying out loud!
"Hey! You have the same camera Avril has"
"Eh....no...it's the....one up from that..."

Marketing has strange affects on many people.
When a car make and model is approved and used by NASCAR, sales for that make and model skyrocket. It's a HUGE boon to the automaker. Never mind that the car on the race track bears absolutely no resemblance to what these people are buying off the dealer lot. Makes no sense to me, but it's true.
McDonald's sales jumped when they started their "I'm lovin' it" campaign a few years ago. Baffles me. The slogan does nothing to tell me why I should want to go there, but apparently it speaks to many other people.

Because your average soccer mom who wants a camera that can acually catch their kids doesn't know who Roger Deakins is.
I wasn't looking into Canon because of a commercial, and I can't image most of the members of this site did the same. Most photographers I find are technical people, and we do our own research (even if it's asking here when Google is faster & easier... you know who you are)

The discussion here sparked my curiosity and I went to YouTube and watched the Nikon ads with Aston Kutcher. After seeing those ads, you couldn't pay me to use a Nikon. I know the product and the celebrity aren't really linked but he just looks like a total clown in those ads.
Nikon used a run a brilliant series where they gave cameras to people in small towns. That was a brilliant ad campaign!
My all time favorite is the Canon football ad, featuring the beautiful piano music. I would give my right arm to have that music on my iPod.

I doubt Ashton thinks of them this way, but maybe they come across to customers as, "Hey look... even that loser can do cool stuff with those cameras.".

Ashton is perfect for the ad - always chimping after he takes a shot - his mentality isn't much more than that of a chimp, and his acting and social skills are about equal, so there you go, couldn't ask for anyone better!

Yesterday after waiting many worrysome months, it finally happened...
"I want the Avril Lavigne camera"
Ideal response: Punch her in the face and tell her to buy a camera based on what she needs instead of who's marketing it.
My actual response: "What colour?"

I hate to break it to you all, but SLR's are geek toys, and yes, I consider myself a geek. Using these Icons of popularity is an attempt to increase their market, and it's working. My sporto brother and his sporto wife have been carrying around a D60.

I loved the Canon AE-1 Program ads back in the 70s. Celebrities claiming it was so easy that even they could do it. The best was Stevie Wonder.

I have seen/heard her music associated with the punk genre.

Endorsed? Probably not. Approved... as in the band was paid royalties... I'd bet so.
I also wonder if that is what Canon named the camera after?
Seriously doubt it, LOL!
I'm thinking more like Keep It Simple, Stupid, or Keep it Simple and Small, or something along those lines. I'd guess the KISS band thing was just thought up by a marketing guy after the fact.

If it was named after the band, one if not all there faces would be on it. OR it would have the paint scheme of there stage characters Its not easy to find much that the band endorses without them putting there name or face on it.

Ehh. The ads annoy me. Not because of the celebrities, but because they act like an SLR is all you need to take good shots. If people actually knew how much work is necessary to take good shots...Precisely, and this is what irks me.
A recent Canon print ad for The T1i has no celebrities, but a woman framing a composition one handed with the T1i's Live view of a boy running towards the camera, a man in the distance readying to throw a football. Lighting is perfect, and father and son are both in focus despite there FOV positions. So, it's a heavily stopped down shot with moving subjects. So the woman in the add is going to take the perfect picture (per the add), but in reality is going to get a fuzzy mess of colors...THEN post up here at POTN asking why here T1i doen't take good in focus pictures...
Sorry, I do apologize for my rant, but this type of advertisement does get on my bad side.
Also, perhaps this add was for the video function and I only chose to veiw said add as a "you to can take great pictures" advert for a dslr...silly me.
Otherwise, advertisement using celebs has no sway on me personally. Heck, If Canon hired Andy Dick to promote the 50L, I'd still buy one...;)
Thanks for the soapbox.
