I bought a new SD300 yesterday and have been having problems connecting it to my new PowerBook. As I understand it, Mac OS X should detect the camera automatically (if it's powered on and in "playback" mode.) Even though I'd rather not use the Canon-supplied software, I even installed those programs hoping that it'd fix the problem.

Both the Image Capture and the "CameraWindow" programs report that no device is connected. I've tried the connection with both the original 16MB SD card and a new PNY 256MB SD card. I've tested the two USB ports on my PowerBook and they work fine. Is there a problem with my new camera?

dont have a SD300, but have a mac. Is there a communications mode on the camera? It might be in a mode that does not allow communication. Also try setting iPhoto to detect such a connection or deselect iPhoto as this might be causing a conflict.

I figured it out with help from someone on a different forum.

First, unlike what the Canon support site says, the camera doesn't have a menu option to change the communication mode. That was one of the things really holding me up.

Apparantly, if you connect the camera, power it on, then reboot the Mac then the Mac will detect the camera normally. That's only required the first time, after that things are good. :)
