I presently have an upgrade version of PS and would like to save (quite) a few bucks by getting the upgrade version of PS CS4.

Can I upgrade from an upgrade version?

Yep. An upgrade version of Photoshop is a full version. You may remember that when you upgraded, you actually had the old version and the new version on your computer at the same time. You had to uninstall the old version once the new version was activated. You can upgrade from an upgrade just fine. I've done it a couple of times.

Not that I know of, they just cannot be used at the same time (the second won't start that is).

I started with PS6, then got the PSCS2 upgrade, and now the PSCS4 upgrade.
I have both PSCS2 and PSCS4 on my Mac. I can use either / or.

AFAIK there's no rule that tells me not to.

I have both PS CS3 (installed with CS3 Production Premium) and PS CS4 (installed with Design Premium CS4) on my computer and although I use PS CS4 now instead of CS3, both versions will still start and run on my computer.
