A volcanic crater in northern Death Valley, near Scotty's Castle. It looks like an inverted mountain.

Great Sandy. What is the color variation at the bottom? I assume it is not water.

Wow...that looks OLD
I can't get enough of those desert shots...the atmosphere is so clean, and that lens is so sharp

Thanks, everyone, for the comments.

It's about 2,400' in diameter and about 500' deep. There is actually a path going to the bottom (I think you can see it in one of those shots), but it is extremely steep and not recommended. I have to wonder how many people get stuck down there every year...
The crater was formed about 2,000 years ago by a volcanic explosion.

It is water, from the rains we've had recently. It's colored that way by the soil and rock.

Nice !. Looks like there are some great places in the desert there.
Cool how you can see the ash-layers draped on top of the crater rim
