Hi there,

I have a little problem with my 1D and 420ex. When in P mode, I sometimes get a tottaly underexposed picture (almost black). What I've to do is to turn off both flash and 1D and then retry. Sometimes it's OK, but sometimes not.

What could be wrong ?

If I use the 420ex with my 10D, I've no problem at all.

Thanks in advance,

MikeG

Is the hot shoe of the 1D loose?
Have you tried a different flash?

When I look at the flash, I can see it emits light.

Not yet. I'm going to order a 580ex, but for the moment, I don't have any others.

A loose connection could do that.

Mike, what about other modes, Tv, Av or M?

From what distance is it being used?

I hate to think too simply but maybe it's just not strong enough. I had a similar problem with the 10D and the 420EX but it was usually because the camera was asking for too much light. Now, using the 550ex, the problem is less likely to occur but I can re-create it if I ask the flash to compensate for f/22 and a 1/500th shutter off of a cathedral ceiling.

I see you have plenty of experience so don't yell at me for patronizing you if that is what I am doing.

I haven't tried those modes yet.

As soon as I get my camera back from the local store for sensor cleaning (I didn't dare to do it myself  ), I'm gonna try this out.

Thanks Ken

I made a test shot at about 1m (3ft)

I just got back my 1D from the local photo store.
I've asked them to check the problem with my 420ex. It seems that this is a compatibility problem between MY 420 and MY 1D. They tried the 1D with another 420ex and no problem. They also tried the 420ex with another body and no problem.
Looks like I won't be able to use them together :(
