I have been a good boy this year and put away some money to spend on the camera: total amount $3,000.00 US.

Now this forum has convinced me that the first purchase will be an EF 70-200mm F/2.8 IS USM so that takes care of 1,700.00 of it.

here is the ultimate question...should I upgrade to the 20D? or buy one more piece of glass?

One of the other forums suggested compiling glass and worrying about upgrading later...following that advice I would likely go for the EF 24 – 70mm f/2.8L USM.

My 300D is only two months old but I already find it limiting. I am a big fan of sports photography and not AI servo really is a Hindrance ( well I guess I could always trick it into that mode but that is just annoying after a while) also the noise (something I wouldn't have noticed two months ago, is beginning to bother me). and the speed to get the Camera up and going...also a pain...if I do trade in what do you think I would get in a trade?

So let's hear it...what would do with the money?

Since you mentioned you like sports photography, I'd upgrade to the 20D + Tamron 28-75 Xr Di and get the 70-200/2.8L IS. The 20D's sports performance is far superior to the digital rebel, moreso than the difference between the Tamron and the Canon lens. You'd still have $300 left over for a good flash too. If you don't like the Tamron after a while you could upgrade to the Canon 24-70/2.8L.

How much are you thinking I will get on a trade in? Does anyone know the going rate?

Check around at this forum, as well as this forum (http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10) for a used EF 80-200 F/2.8 lens. You won't have the IS or USM, but you'll almost save enough to get yourself a nice used EF 24-70 F/2.8 to go with it.
