I today pressed the order button for a new 100-400mm L. I purchased it, together with a 580EX from B&H but it will take approx 2 weeks to get "Down Under". I wish it was here today but I comfort myself during the long days of waiting knowing that I saved about $1,000 Aussie dollars by making the purchase from B&H. (Maybe a down payment for a 70-200mm 2.8L?)
My first L but I doubt it will be my last.:)

In the time you wait before you receive that lens, you can start doing arm strength exercises. That is not a trivial lens.

I was out and about in yesterdays Spring sunshine with my 20D and the 100-400. The images that lens produces never cease to amaze me, you'll love it!! Get the 70-200 2.8L as well and you'll be in lens heaven ;)
Post some shots when you get it!

Hi Mootsyman,
I am thinking about doing the same thing. I would be interested in knowing if you get charged import duty coming into Australia.....

That is true. But for a 400 mm f/5.6 IS lens, it isn't terribly heavy either. Once you get used to it, anyway.

While you wait for your lens, you can dream about all the fabulous photos you will take. I love mine!

Everybody says it's a big lens, but I really don't think it's all that bad. I carry mine handheld everywhere, and can spend a day with it at the zoo, air show, etc no problem. Just keep it on the camera strap over my shoulder when I'm not using it. I spent a day with the 200 1.8... now THAT'S a lens that will get your attention after hand holding for about 20 minutes!
But I wouldn't trade my 100-400 for the world (well I'd trade it for a 300 2.8 IS!) It's such a versatile lens and the results are excellent.

Jason, will do. But even allowing for 10% duty, $1850.40 USD (including postage) @ say 0.78 exchange rate = $2,372 + 10 % = $2,609.50. I am getting prices, Canon RRP of $3,350, for the 100-400 alone and other local prices of $2,500 to $3,000.
I have effectively picked up a 580EX (local price $700) for nothing.
If I happen to avoid duty I am just that much further in front.

Yeah, let us know...
A friend of mine bought some gears from B&H. He told me that he had to pay import duty (about 13%)....
Anyway, any lens from B&H (including postage and import duty) still much cheaper compared to local stores.
BTW, what kind of delivery (they offer several types) have you selected?

I selected Global UPS 5-7 days. Freight came to about USD $90 but all up still a hell of a lot cheaper than buying locally. I am sure Aussie retailers just buy from B&H and add a margin....
