Got this from NWA in an email:
Carry-on luggage will be limited to one piece plus one of the following:
a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer for all flights. A carry-on
piece can have a total linear measurement (height+width+length) of up
to 45 inches. Once again, when measuring luggage, wheels and/or handles
are not included in the measurements.
Wouldn't that rule out alot of backpacks (I have the Tenba Shootout Large---it used to be ok)
Anyone know for sure about this?

That appears to be what it has been for a while, I use a REI daypack for carry on and have never had an issue.

I use a Pelican 1510 roller case. It meets the airline specs,

Think Tank Airport International can be carried on domestic and international, hence the name I guess. I've never had a problem with airline officials...OR the amount of gear I can shove in that bag.

Note too that if your traveling on one of the RJ flights these measurements aren't accurate.

I flew with this a exactly one year ago and it was ok/fit in the fit frame thingy----am going to Mexico in less than two weeks and technically its a couple/few inches too big now---it has my attention at this point.

The LowePro Vertex 200 AW sqeezes in (quite literally) by the skin of it's teeth. But I don't own a laptop, so the laptop compartment stays empty.

I usually use my Think Tank Airport Security bag for domestic flights. It is the maximum allowable size. I've had no problems.

I take my enormous LowePro CompuRover AW on the plane all the time and stuff it under the seat in front of me. (I have to be careful not to get a bulkhead seat on regional flights)

I carry a Crumpler Karachi Outpost loaded with a body, three lenses (including a 70-200mm f2.8), a 580EX, with all accessories, card reader, laptop (and accessories). It is heavy but fits in the overhead compartment of Airtran jets (which are small)

I think I better stop by the airport and verify if it still fits, I am 4" over accroding to the airline specs (going off manufactures website)----I really don't want to have this be at the discresion of someone who is having a bad day and thinks I should pay for an extra bag (which is quite expensive now days)

Check with the skycaps at the airport, they will let you know if it will get by or not.

You should certainly note that while 45 linear inches is the standard in the United States, how airlines arrive at 45 linear inches is not standardized.
To see the problem with current carry on baggage templates read here
http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/2009/01/22/airline-carry-on-baggage-templates-does-anyone-measure-them/
You should also note that international carry on, and North American carry on are not the same, and should take a moment to read this

Be very careful to NOT exceed size or weight limits with carriers outside North America! Very strictly enforced, and the sizes indeed will factor in wheels and handles and other bits that American carriers choose to not factor into the dimension limite.

Wilt,
I addressed weight limits today on Flying With Fish in this post:

Sorry to be a naysayer about that post...
Giving the appearance of 'light weight' can help, but Air New Zealand asked me to weigh a very small Lowepro Stealth Reporter 100 even though it was not stuffed to the gills. It had two lenses (Tamron 28-75 and Canon 10-22) and a 20D! They unconditionally asked for ALL pieces of hand luggage my wife and I carried to be weighed, appearances be dammed, both outbound to NZ and also coming home.

Wilt,
Interesting. I have yet to be stopped. I know some who have been pinched, most notably Vincent LaForet, while on assignment for the New York Times, returning home on Lufthansa. He wrote about it here : http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=20827
I have on Air New Zealand between LAX & LHR (and the return) and watched others get stopped, but I've managed to board without any problems and a fully loaded Lightware Digital Backpack. The bag must have weighted 35+ lbs, but I sailed right through.
I AKL can be a stickler of an airport in general. Remember that cameras on shoulders do not count against carry on items.
Happy Flying!

FWIW, US Airways has begun getting a tad draconian at the boarding door of late. I've seen them gate tag many bags that prior to a couple of months ago would have been let onboard without a second glance.
They've added the H/W/D outline to the front of their podiums in Phoenix...

Flying,
A US exec recently informed me that they might be be adding templates at gate doors shortly as well in PHL, CLT, LGA, DCA and PHX. They are looking into the costs of creating the bag templates for widespread distribution.
So far US has stated they'll start checking weight, but only have the ability to check dimensions at the gate.

This is the key to potential weight problems. I always try to fly with a coat or vest with capacious pockets, just in case my carry-on is deemed too heavy. This hasn't happened to me yet (I'm 6'5" and very good at making large bags look small and light) but it did happen to a friend I was traveling with. So we stood there at check-in and transferred 4kg of stuff from his bag into my pockets, got the bag passed as light enough, then transferred 4kg back into the bag. All in front of the check-in clerk who didn't bat an eyelid!

I flew Delta/Alitalia to Ukraine 3 or so weeks ago with my ThinkTank Airport Antidote AND a rolling carryon... got on without a problem...
US Airways hassled my wife and I about 6 weeks ago on a domestic flight saying something like we had too many bags (true we had been forced to gate check our rolling carryons, not a big deal but we took out our laptops and their request) and the gate agent said it was a federal crime if she "let" us go into the jetway with too many bags - it was a first to me. I happened to be so sick and i was so mad because the lady would not listen to my repetitive story about the previous flight's gate check... finally we just shoved all our crap BACK into our carry ons right in front of the gate agent and walked on... between that and my observations on an outbound US Air flight a few weeks before, i'm not the big fan of US Air (tho that Schulenburg fellow is the man!)

Whaddya expect - used to be Agony Airlines . . .
All Agony Airlines
In my long flying history, the absolute worst airline experiences were with airlines that all eventually went out of business...Pan Am, Eastern.
Now two more of the worst I have experience are merged...Northworst and Delta. Neither were as bad as the two that went out of business, but it does not bode well when they get together...neither management team seems capable.
