Welcome to the first of hopefully many C&C Competitions for the Rebel XSi/450D.

This is not a serious competition but is meant to be fun, please treat it as such.

These are the rules:

1. Camera - Must be a Rebel XSi/450D
2. Time - The photo must be taken after the competition has started.
3. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - As many photos per photographer in each challenge. Because this is a C&C competition you can re-post an image after it has been C&C'd. Please include Photo Name in the message subject line. Lens used. Please post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - There will be a winner for best comment so feel free to C&C.
7. Have FUN!

The competition will end on Wednesday 28th January 2009 at 23:59 GMT and the judges decision is final.

The winning photographer then gets to chose the subject of the next competition and judge the entries.

Now for this weeks theme:

Color

Take a picture that has the most vibrant color or colors

Good luck and let the competition begin....

Is there going to be a new thread every week, or just adding onto this thread? Oh, and thanks for letting my XS in on the action :).

I would say a new one every week the whole point of doing this is for those that didn't make it in on the posted competition that wanted in on it to learn. Same as the other thread I would say winner chooses a new topic I didn't create the post so I have no say what does the community think?

We currently have a "Rebel" challenge going on. We were talking about doing a weekly one. Very similar rules, but all Rebels (300D-1000D) were allowed. Maybe we should combine the two? I'd love to play, but I have a 1000D.

Yes I know I am the judge so I cannot win but thought I would post this one to get the ball rolling. This is not an indication of what I am looking for or like so please don't read anything into it.

Aperture f5.6
Shutter Speed 1/50
Focal Length 300mm
Lens EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Yes it did come out very dark but a lot of PP and if you squint a bit it looks okish....

What I did first was link the photo from host and then opened DPP, got the photo info, copy and paste in thread below photo link. Does that make sense?

I really didn't want to take pics of flowers...but I couldn't make it into downtown to get some nice night pics with neon and such.

Sorry I'm not much for comments and criticisim. Thats why I'm in here...to learn how to take my own and then I will be able to critique. Though I will say from first glance....SteveJa and pupmeister your pics look overexposed. Did you guys do any PP to try and fix that? I would also try to take those pics w/o flash. It looks like it washed out a lot of the colors.

Hello Ladies and Gents, this will be my first post but I've been lurking and learning SO much for quite a while now. I think this is a GREAT concept so I'm excited to add my entry. Not much has been done to the photo, it was taken at the Dayton Art Institute of an acrylic ball/sculpture of some sort. I loved the lines and shapes and colors in it. It was so dark that with the ISO at 1600 I still had to keep the aperture wide open for even a decent shutter speed. The Art Institute doesn't allow tripods, I'm surprised they even allow cameras, however.

So blast away!

Camera: Canon Rebel XSi 450D
Lens: 50mm 1.8
ISO: 1600
Aperture: 1.8
Shutter Speed: 1/50

Shot RAW, sharpened, cropped, and added border in PS.

Thanks for the compliments, I've been very happy with the high ISO performance of the XSi. Pair it with a fast lens and it really opens up new worlds of low light shooting without the need for flash.

Great image, Steve. Taken with a Nifty Fifty I'm guessing? Did you desaturate the background? Because those birds really pop.

Too bad you couldn't have gotten the rest of the tail in there, maybe portrait orientation using the trees to still do the framing, I love that part as well. The trees are subtle but with really cool textures.

The bird looks pissed, that's the evil eye he's giving you!

These post just go to show that the hardware you possess effects your image quality...

Garrian_Guitars
28th of January 2009 (Wed), 16:06
Hardware (lenses) certainly makes a difference in poor conditions, like the hand-holding in my dark museum shot. However, I have gotten spectacular results with the kit lens when light is plentiful or when a tripod is used. Stop the aperture down a few and quit pixel-peeping at 100% and it produces totally workable files. Your post-processing regimen can also make a big difference.

Jared572
28th of January 2009 (Wed), 17:17
I agree you can get superb images with the kit lens. I'm just saying better glass makes things a tad bit easier :D

Garrian_Guitars
28th of January 2009 (Wed), 17:53
Can't dispute that fact! I like good gLass as much as the next guy :) I just know that if I get unusable images I only have myself to blame, no matter what's on the front end of the camera. (conditions pending of course, the kit lens wouldn't have taken the shot I posted without a tripod)

Yes it was the 50mm........ not sure why I did not get the tail in the picture.

Also I did nothing to the picture, it was a raw and I just resized it.

Thanks again.:D

And the winner is:

SteveJa for Parrot....

Loved the color, would have liked to see the birds tail but the reds really do stand out.

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7201048&postcount=40

I also nearly chose SteveJa again for this http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7174862&postcount=19 if only it had been a bit brighter.

And this http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7178694&postcount=22 was also very close by Reinheim.

This was a tough competition and harder to judge than I ever though as all the pictures were very good.

Once again well done SteveJa. Over to you to chose the next challenge.

Thanks again
