I just received my G2! I have been playing with it and I love it. I am seriously considering getting the 420ex. Can it work off of the hot shot directly or do I need to get a stroboframe like a friend has? If I do not need the Stroboframe do I still need the connecting "cord" from Canon? If I need the Stroboframe which one is best? Sorry to sound so dense but I am really new to this. But I really appreciate the advice of this forum! :-)) THANKS!

The 420ex attaches directly to the hot shoe on your camera. The accessories you mention can be helpful in creating different lighting schemes but are not essential. I am considering the off-camera cord for some family portrait work, but I wonder if the length (2 feet) would make enough difference to justify the cost. Right now I bounce the flash and use a small white card to redirect some of the light; the result is pleasant. I suggest trying some cheap reflectors (white foam-core boards) or a homemade diffuser (cut-up plastic milk jug) before you invest in the accessories. :)

Happy shooting,

i can't fire with the G2 internal flash after i use a 420EX flash even when i remove the 420EX from the hot shoe, i press the flash button on the back of G2, it does not work.

When fire with the 420EX indoor, it works well, but does not work well on some outdoor night fire. over explsoure sometime.
