I'm thinking of buying an Elinchrom studio lighting system, the EL500 in fact. Have heard that its 12v and my 300D/20D are 6v compatible. presumably there there might well be damage caused to my cameras. Any thoughts? Perhaps a recommendation of a diferent quality studio system?

Those are good strobes. I'd use a Wein Safe synch or a radio slave system to fire them. They probably won't hurt your camera but "probably" isn't all that nice a word especially if your cameras are out of warantee.

thanks Dave, had heard a wireless system would be preferable

The 300d needs a 6v trigger, however the 20d can stand a lot more. However for Convenience I'd try using a safe sync or radio slaves.

The hotshoes on both cameras are 6 volts, however the pc port on the side of the 20D is rated 250 volts according to the manual.
