This is more of a post for humor.
Being in the field you get to see and hear some pretty funny stories. Lets here them!
My story...
I was shooting with a guy that called himself a pro and had nice gear as well. Got talking to him and he wanted to know what settings I was shooting since he liked the photos on the LCD. I told him and assumed he was in the same ballpark. This is where it gets good... he said that he didn't know what ISO he was shooting. He didn't ever change it and didn't know what effect if would have on the camera settings. I was a little blown away. A pro with no clue about ISO settings. Nikon D300 with grip and nice DX lens. Being a nice guy I helped him out and he went on to shoot. Then I had two other photographers shooting with Nikon D40s laughing asking... did he really just ask what the ISO did. We all had a laugh and I told them that Nikons were designed for trained monkeys going to space. It got quiet and we got back to work.
Just goes to remind you that it doesn't matter what gear they have. If they don't know how to use it then its just a fancy point and shoot.
There is always the small talk and questions but this one was great. Was a nice break from the how many mega pixels is that thing or I have a lens just like that when your lugging around a 70-200 2.8 or a 100-400.

You know, I think a lot of guys buy pro grade gear and haven't learned the fundamental techniques of exposure yet. For the most part, they can get decent images in the auto mode.
I think when the lighting becomes difficult is when the camera/gear lets you down though.

My friend's friend (I don't know her) is starting up her own wedding photography business. Has the rates and contract just like a pro would have. But the sad part- she only has a Sony superzoom P&S at the moment! I guess she is looking into a Nikon D60 kit. I told him (to tell her) she should have a D90 or D80 at the very least, since the cheaper models have poor ISO performance. She's all anti-Canon for some unknown reason (and she is pro- Sony).. It's sad to know that she is going to fall flat on her face and possibly make some bride and grooms angrey with garbage pictures. And based on personal experience having 6mth-1yr of experience shooting with a DSLR before attempting to shoot a wedding! And she wonders why I wouldn't be charging for shooting a wedding (I've shot one for a friend for free, which turned out great, but I am not a pro by any means).

This is what happens when the C&C comes from friends & relatives. Sad really, she'll be burned at the stake for having "nice" friends.

I teach high school (yeah, lucky me). I took team and individual photos of the cheerleaders. I uploaded the picutres to my website and got serveral orders.
One day I got an email from a grandparent. The writer told me how much he liked the photos. I think the word he used was "Wow." The only problem was that he couldn't right-click to save the photos. He wanted to know how he could save them, or could I email them to him....
I started to reply and ask was he joking or was I on some kind of digital candid camera show. I ended up just saying they were for sale, that's why he couldn't right-click and there was a digital only option if he didn't want prints.

HAHAHA.... she is going to fall flat on her face...
but in her defense.... no I can't defend her....
Gotta give her a bit of credit though... she HAS asked me to help her. But I told her I refuse to charge because of my lack of experience, which she is just flabbergasted by. She has no clue why anyone would do a job for free!
Don't be thinking I am one of the Good friends that lets it slide either, she does take some good pictures, but a lot of them are just too plain soft to the point where they look like they are out of focus! Dave described it as comparable to "having grease on your lens".
She isn't directly in the GTA, but wouldn't hesitate to take a gig in the area. She is from the Lindsay/Peterborough area. I'm not going to post her name just in case she does smarten up and do things right, I don't want to ruin her chances of making something of it.

Does the couple who is getting married know she's planning to use a point and shoot?...and charge them?

Caveat Emptor
The couple should be asking questions, checking references, looking at portfolios, etc. Perhaps her pricing reflects her experience and picture quality. Obviously, she she should be upfront and honest about her capabilities.

Also, a P&S is not an automatic deal breaker. I would rather have a pro with a P&S than a hack with a 1Ds mkIII. Again, photographer first, equipment second.

She is charging $900 for 8hr coverage. As far as I know this would be her first real wedding as a main photog, she does have her portfolio so the couples should know what they are getting into. Perhaps they are just cheap and don't want to spend $2000 on a good photographer.

Her pictures all look like snapshots, and then overprocessed afterwards..

Hahaha. Nice thread and content! Damn, how I would love to know this person! :D I'm sorry but I simply wouldn't be able to contain myself. I'm a newbie myself, but at least I know my limitations and wouldn't even think of doing something like that without a few months experience shooting people at least. And with a p&s!! Hahaha, just wow!

I feel sorry for this couple, and if I knew them or someone who knew them I don't think I'd be able to keep my mouth shut on they are probably getting ripped off. It happens everywhere though, people trying to jump into the business way before they are ready. After all if that dummy from the 70's show can shoot a wedding with professional results on the commercial EVERYONE can, right? Does nothing but put more negativity towards the profession in the consumers eyes.
