As a portable lighting kit, I use (3) 550EX's, and a lightstand with Photoflex Multiclamp and an umbrella. I use wireless ETTL with ratios.

I use both a pair of 550EX flashes or a set of Alien bees with a vagabond for a portable studio lighting setup. Depends by which means I am traveling to the location. If by air, then the 550EXs go, if by car then the Alien Bees go.
Both will turn out great results (although it is easier with the ABs.)
Just my experience and opinion,

if you don't have access to outlets, get quantum qflashes. if there will always be an outlet nearby, get alien bees.
or ... you could get the alien bees and a vagabond. it's on the alien bee sight.
