G1 Manual Exposure Metering

Well I've scoured through the owners manual (pg. 62 covers "M"), did a search in this forum and I'm at a real loss. There's something not evident on my G1 or it just doesn't exist at all. :(
I've set the camera setting to"M" so I can set the aperature and shutter. How the heck do I meter a shot other than a handheld meter or basically take an educated guess ?

If your G1 is anything like the G2 and the G3, if the shutter and aperture settings you have selected is different from what the internal meter would select by more than + or - 2 stops, you'll see a red + or - 2 in the upper left hand corner of the LCD screen when you half-press the shutter button. If it's within + or - 2 stops, then the number will be white instead of red. What you want to do is adjust your shutter or aperture (or both) so that the number you see is +/-0 which means that you've set the camera the way the meter would without any exposure compensation.

Yup, that's exactly how the M mode works in G2 and G3. It uses the EC meter to tell you how far off you are from the meter reading. Sorry to hear that the G1 doesn't have this feature. :( Is it time to upgrade to a G6, maybe? ;)

No problem! I have a G1 and if I want to see what settings will give me the right exposure in M, then I first go to either P, Tv or Av and take a reading there.

I find, however, that I rarely use full manual "M". Usually I want a particular aperture OR a particular shutter speed for a particular shot, but rarely both.

Already went the 20D route with a DRebel in between. Actually wanted to set the G1 in manual to make some comparisons between metering on the DReb and 20D. Think I'll try what teekay suggested. That will probably do what I want as well.
