hey guys.
I just got a new 24" imac. Just the standard specs with 2 gigs of RAM.
I just uploaded 100 raw images, which I shot with my 5d. Usually when I upload using my pc laptop this will take around 30 minutes.
When using the imac, this took over 90 minutes.
Is this normal??
I really hope not
Thanks Sonny

no that's not normal, my pre-intel imac doesnt take anywhere near that uploading raw files direct from my 30D

It sounds like your camera is defaulting to USB 1. That it happens on both systems points to the problem being with the camera or wire. I would try switching wires, then if that doesn't work then switch memory cards and if it still doesn't work then I would start looking into either getting the camera looked at or flashing the firmware with the newest version.

Get a firewire CF Card reader. On my iMac 24", I use:
SanDisk CF Extreme FireWire (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/446772-REG/SanDisk_SDDRX4_CFR_Extreme_FireWire_CompactFlash_C ard.html)
You'll never wan to use USB again. With my Extreme III CF cards and using the FW 800 port, I download 4-8 GB cards smokin' fast.

sorry Im a bit of a rookie.
What do you mean by switching wires?
I thought it was something wrong with the mac, as images are downloaded alot faster when I use my pc??
thanks sonny

He is talking about your USB cable. Are you using a card reader to transfer or are you plugging in your camera directly?

I think he means what port is your card reader plugged into? A problem with USB 2 is that a USB 1.1 device is present in the bus, the bus slows down to USB 1.1 speeds. The Mac keyboard is USB 1.1 (I think). Try plugging the reader into one of the open USB ports on the rear of your iMac.

Get a card reader first off because even the 30 minute download time for the pc is way slow.

Definitely get a reader, firewire 800 is fastest, see my post above. Your iMac has a firewire 800 port on the back. You will be amazed at the speed difference. Also it saves the battery on your camera.

OK, let me see if I get what's happening.
PC - Takes up to 30 minutes (that is way too slow - a full card should only take around 5-10 minutes max)
Mac - Takes even longer than PC (90 min?) - That is way way way too slow, even for USB 1.1.
It is really starting to sound like you're camera's USB wire, the camera or memory card is not functioning properly (if the memory card actually works). You can still buy a firewire card reader and that will solve your upload problem - but you really want to know if your camera is functioning properly. If your problem still persists with a new wire and a new memory card then you likely have a problem with the camera.
You have three options after the tests - 1) Just use a firewire card reader and don't use the camera again to upload photos, 2) Upgrade your firmware on your camers (and see if it fixes the problem) or 3) Send it to Canon.
Remember, try it with a new wire and reformat your card first before opting for one of the three above options.

its definately software related. I was using the eos utility program to upload. When I used iphoto it downloaded very quickly.
