at the present i have the 18-55 usm kit lens and the nifty fifty. 52 and 58 threads. so i just have UV filters in each size.
have been looking seriously into filters. in this search Cokin, Lee and Singh Ray were brought forth.
Cokin stands out the most due to the pricing of the P series.
http://www.cokin.fr/ says the P will work for lens diameters from Ø48mm to Ø82mm and the X will work for lens diameters from Ø62mm to Ø118mm.
with concerns of vignetteing i the high end of the P's. as many know there are alot of L's with 77 mm threads. so the concern is whether real world shows vignetteing on the P system with the 77 mm thread lens's? such as the 17-40, 1-400.

would hate to go the route of the P series only to have issues with the future lens purchases. no sense in spending money twice or having both the P and X series. but the prices of the X series is crazy.

any and all help is appreciated.

what i shoot. just about anything. if weather permitted i would shoot auto racing yearround. but it does not so i have to be flexible.
so landcapes, buildings, sunsets, reflections, flowers, cars...not much on people though.

thanx in advance

Yes, the prices of the X series get crazy. For the P series, which is what most of us use, I suppose that it might be possible to get into trouble if you were getting close to the maximum diameter limit. I know of only one way around that.

You know how the filter holder has three slots on each side, so you can hold three filters at the same time? Well, how many people use three filters at the same time? Practically nobody. So, consider chopping off the outer-most slot. Make it into a two-filter holder instead of three. I would wager that it still does 99% of what it was intended to do, yet you won't likely run into the wide problem of vignetting.

To chop off the sides, I would use a Dremel tool. A fine saw would do it too.

I have the sigma 15-30 which is 82mm.At the wide end vinetting is slightly evident with Cokin P upto approx.18.Would probably be solved by Robertgross's circumcision !(the Cokin not personally )
Hope this is of some help.

That's a painful thought.

Cokin also sells a narrow filter holder. One that only holds one filter.
The only area you need to worry is on wide angle and with the 20D crop factor you would have to have a very wide angle lense to have a problem.

An even better idea...I have no issue with trying to cut off the third filter notch...but I like this idea better...less chance to take off a finger...hehe.

Monty and I are planning a trip to some camera shops, and we were trying to gather some information before heading out. The list of questions just keeps growing...thanks for the input...:)

the info and input is much appreciated.
for me wide is not a big deal at this point in time. but eventually i am sure i will end up with a wider lens. the kit has not seen much use yet. has been mostly the nifty fifty.
i do not see a problem with my main type of photography which would be mid to big zoom in racing and action. but i do see myself doing some landscape at a later date. where a wide lens is prolly going to fit into the bag nicely.

so if the problem is going to mainly be at the wide end of things then mayb some playtime is a good idea before jumping into the water with both feet.
would hate to go the P way and end up unhappy with the pics due to vignetteing one larger thread glass.

thanx again for the info.

sure hope you get your rest Mac as we have alot of things to do and only so much time to do it in.
