the cups & jewelry is fantastic! great work. i love #4.
the food i am not too sure about. at first glance it does not look appetizing. hopefully you will get a proper critique from a food photog. thanks for sharing -- alex.

Great images. Could see these in adverts!
I agree with sally though...The cakes should be bright and make you want to devour them! and they just look a bit subdued and depressed!!

I think the food shots would work if you took it a little further with the colorization. I was thinking that the overall coffee coloring kind of suits..maybe take that route?

Hi guys! Thanks for the wonderful comments, this is my first time at this kind of work and I love it! I was going for a look where I felt that the coffee and cake would looks as though they could be in the same advert (I could do a coffee shop board or something) but I can definately see where you're comming from.
With regards to the background, I used several sheets of cards (3 for the bottom, then 2 vertical) and then just used the burn tool in photoshop at 100%. I use the same technique to get white but obviously with the dodge tool.
I used a light tent to get these (I borrowed off a friend) and a 200W studio strobe each side, I moved them up and down with every shot so I'm not sure what it was exactly for each shot.
One thing I leant was how hard it was to get the required DOF - even at f/18 it was difficult :s ...!
I'll do a couple of edits and see how they look and post them :)
I'm happy to answer any more questions :D

Very nice look to them all, what processing did you do on number 2?

Hi, I can't quite remember. It's a mix of TRActions, Prob - super old skool, vignnett + blur and Boutwells Magic glasses. Oh, and some Cinamon Toast (my fave!)
Here's the edits, tell me what you think :)

I have found the best thing to use for this type of thing is Black Fleece.
Any detail is easily erased with curves and a little bit of cloning.

While I'm new to photography, I have more experience with graphic design.
From the latest edits I agree that the last one appears the most appetizing, however I believe it would look even tastier if the plate had some color to it. Maybe a soft blue or green. The white on white and soft focus towards the rear blends the food and the plate.

None of the food ones work for me. Pastries are a very tuff subject anyway. I might find a different food.
The coffee ones are perfect. I can definatley see them as an ad in a magazine. Or in a menu.
The jewelry are good, but the blacks are too deep. To a point where they are distracting. I would have shot both at more of a higher perspective. You just cant tell what shape the earrings really are.
