Just thinking - never a good thing with me. Suppose Canon has plans for a sensor with a negative crop factor, i.e., larger than 36x24mm full-frame. Something like a 45mm x 30mm for a 0.8 crop, which maintains the 3:2 sensor dimensions? Around 30mp. Of course, the body would be formidable, and think of the shutter sound - at 5fps!

Maybe not the 1Ds Mk IV. EOS ZD? EOS M1?

You know this will end up being transferred to the rumor mill.

Pop this into the rumors section, eh?

A negative crop factor would wreak havoc with the EF mount and the image circle.. I'm not sure how big it is.

You been smokin' somethin':)? Boy, people complain about vignetting and corner softness as it is!

Doubt it.. consider the lenses. EF lenses are designed for FF.

Anyway, in before the move-to-rumor.

Yeah! Totally! .8 crop!

Except not a single EF lens would work...

What's the point of a 0.8 crop if no lenses will work with it...

Told you me sitting around thinking is a formula for disaster.
Didn't think about the EF mount - we..need..new lenses!! No, wait..Canon will make a .8x teleconverter: 1/4" slim, ED glass, modifies the image circle before it hits the bodacious sensor.

I didn't realize there was a Rumors forum.

MODS: Please move. Sorry about that.

lmao super vignetting on every existing lens, if it even would work at all...

haha, hey, it might have HD just like the 5d2

Vignetting will not be an issue. Or I should say, Canon can update some lenses so that the image circle is larger, because Canon lens mount has a large diameter. Remember, Nikon's lens mount's diameter is much smaller for the 35mm format, so the larger Canon mount should be able to accommodate image circles larger than the 35mm format.

The real problem is the mirror. There will not be enough clearance for a mirror significantly larger than what is in the 1Ds Mk III.

Maybe the bigger sensor can be used for in-body IS :p

What's the point of speculating around things that we'll never actually know until the thing is released?

You obviously haven't visited the Rumors forums (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=82).

Full of useless cr*p like this - It's a bit like an online 'wish-list'

I know, that's my point - it seems so absurdly silly given that 85% of what's posted aren't actually rumours but rather just people making rubbish up like "The new 1d MkIV will be FF, 35mp, 24fps in both still and HD video mode, with quad processors and a pop up flash. It will retail at $500USD and Canon will be offering a 50% trade in on any old Canon film or digital SLR body, and a 25% trade in on point and shoots." Come on, people!

TSE's would. Smaller movements though.

Well why not go back to a square format like way back in the day (1929) when Rolleiflex square format came about! :D

An EF lens could be used on a 36x36 and it doesnt even need to be 36x36, but for the sake of the image circle we will stick with that.

Now just add an in-camera adjustable crop factor and you can switch back down to 36x24 or whatever you want. Tweak it mm for mm so you can get a 10x20 or a 20x20 or whatever you want. Who needs to resize and crop with external programs when it can be done in Camera?

Now I understand that some lenses like the 24-105mm have a rectangular baffle. Solution? Send it in to Canon for a cheap upgrade and new circular baffle!

Now with the problem with the mirror well why not use a pellicle mirror like in the EOSRT? Of course you will lose 2/3 of an fstop, oh well. :)

But think of the blazing speed without a moving mirror, and with such high ISO sensors like the 5DII then who will miss that 2/3rd stop? What about the panning of action shots?

heh, cool beans if you ask me :)

But unless they come knocking on my e-mail I dont think anything like that will happen.

Would be neat though...

Maybe with 0.8 crop it'll be compatible with UHDV video?

0.8 crop? why not 0.5 crop coupled with low ISO 25

No, it cannot.
Do the math again: A 24x36mm rectangle will need a smaller image circle then a 36x36mm square...
