Just wondering if anyone else is a fan of great movie Cinematography too? Like you see some movie (the story might suck) but you watch it and are just awe struck by the angles and scenery and more.
I am not really interested in ever getting a video camera and shooting but I find some movies really awesome just by the places they are filmed.
Besides Lord of the Rings (which most of it is fake) some of my favorite Cinematography movies are.
The Postman (The plot was pretty predictible but I love the Cinematography of this movie, it really is well filmed)
Duel (A 1970 Spielberg movie the takes place in a old car, its amazing!)
Braveheart (I love Scotland!)
Angela's Ashes (The old town, river and country side is most amazing)
The Last of the Mohicans (Its sort of a love story but wow the place it is shot is beatiful!)
So anyone else like Cinematography as much as I do?

Interesting side discussion, does it matter if its computer generated, digital or analouge film?
And, as a side note much of LOTR is actualy real, its just so unique to NZ that its easily mistaken for being fake :)
2001 Space Oddyssy, is one of those movies I could watch with the sound off, just for the Cinematography.

Duel is an excellent choice,. that movie is Cinematogaphry and little else.. What ever happened to Dennis Weaver? (is that his name? McCloud?)
Space Odyssy is another good one.. but if were doing Sci Fi we can't forget to mention Blade Runner.. one of the most influential movies of all time..
Go back and take a look at the original Frankenstein with Boris Karloff,.. despite its age.. it's visuals really hold up. The grave digging scene is just miraculous.
And don't forget your Kurasawa.. "Ran" in particular.
Here's an odd one... small low budget teen coming of age type flick with a wicked sense of humor and freaking fantastic photography.. "Three O:Clock High"
For modern classics,. let us not forget Pulp Fiction... ;)

Oh I know the mountains and outside shots of the movie are of NZ but the forrest with the Ents, Mordor and stuff like that are obviously computer generated scenes which is the fake part of it. The place LOTR was filmed in NZ is a lot like the rockies of Alberta.
Another movie I like is Gladiator (yeah I know fake too) but I like how Ridley Scott made everything real looking, as in Old, used and dirty. In the past you would see ancient rome and it would be like an episode of the first Star Trek, new, nondirty and unused.
"Last of the dogman" is a great Cinematography movie. It was actually filmed in Alberta in a place called Canmore and Kananaskis Provincial Park. Its about a Montana guy who is looking for escaped prisoners and comes accross a lost tribe of indians in the mountains. Very awesome scenery in it, if you have seen it, the helicopter scene they were filming when I was camping there.
And one of my all time favorites is a movie 65 years old called "Grapes of wrath" that movie is absolutely amazing, awesome Cinematography in it and even more impressive since it was shot in 1940!
