is there a way to turn off the flash on most of the modes on the rebel XT? i can't seem to figure it out.
if there isn't, is there a reason? seem like it would be very handy, for when u want no flash.

If you mean keep it from automatically popping up, you need to set the camera to the creative zones (at least that's how it works on the 20D -- I presume it's the same for the 3x0Ds). Otherwise it'll keep popping up whenever the light conditions are too low.

You should read the manual, but here's the answer.
There is a button to manually pop-up the flash. Push it. The flash will now activate.

In the previous rebel is on the right of the lens (when looking from the front). It is a small black button with the flash icon next to it.

If you really don't know, then you are asking a valid question that deserves an answer.
When a member takes the time to respond, please don't come back with "Read the manual"
