I have a 10D and just bought the Tamron 28-75 for people/portrait/candid shots and love it. (I also have a 300L for my birds!).

I don't do a lot of landscape type shots, but would like to get an affordable wide lense for the 10D. I was talking to guy last week who uses the Canon 15mm f2.8 on a 20D and loves it.

Money is a consideration for me, is there any cheaper alternative or is the best wide angle I can hope for? Will probably end up buying on ebay, FM or here.

many thanks for any suggestions
A.

I just received the Tokina 19-35 3.5-4.5 from B&H, admittedly it's going to give you about 30mm in film terms bit it's very good value and I'm happy with sharpness and quality compared to the 18-55mm kit lens.

I shoot very few wide angle shots but I wanted to have a lens with decent wide angle 'just in case'.. Because of that I didn't want to spend a lot on a wide angle lens.

I wound up with the Sigma 15-30.. (My only non-Canon lens).. It's a pretty good, I'm happy with it. Of course as I expected, I hardly use it :)

After a little research into Canon's cheaper wide primes I came to the conclusion that this is not one of Canon's stronger areas. I ended up buying the 17-40 which --if I believe what I read-- gives equal or better results for the cost of a couple cheap primes. Assuming you don't need a faster lens.

thanks; will have a look out for a 15-30 - I don't need a fast lense.

if you use a Zenitar 16mm on a 10D; does it become a 'standard 26mm lense' or does it retain the fisheye attributes?? Is this a stupid question? Is it a heavy/large lense?

thanks, A.

Antaine,

unfortunately, I don't have the time right now, but do a forum search, I remember that there are threads with images from this lens.

Two threads that might help as examples...

I too have the Tamron 28-75 & have just purchased a Sigma 15-30 to replace one I had stolen, love both of them. Now just need the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, & my shopping list is complete or is it ? Must wean myself off this site it's soooo addictive (read expensive ! )

I have the Sigma 15-30, which lives on my D60 most of the time (20D has the 24-70 L or a tele). It's a good lens, although I'm hankering for their 12-24.

You want a wide angle but you didn't specify the kinds of shots you plan on using the wide angle. For digital, true wide angle is really limited and you need to get below 18mm for any 1.6x DSLR.

Do you need fixed, zoom or fish-eye?
Fixed: Recommend Sigma 15mm
Zoom: Recommend Canon 16-35L f2.8: Pricey but excellent res/apeture

Will your shots require wide angle some or all of the time during the shoot?

Examples:
Weddings require flexibility, portrait shots can be fixed but event shots tend to take zoom in order to alleviate lens/camera swaps.

Landscapes do require wideangle but that's at the expense of DOF compression - do your shots attempt to mix local subject with background (landscape)?

John,

You gots the 20D - go for the 10-22 EF-S. I've gotten excellent results.

The Tamron 17-35mm f2.8 - 4 Di works well. The only downside is very slow focussing. Not too much of an issue for landscapes though.

Yeah, and I've got the D60 as well. I'm not buying a lens I can't pop on both, and potentially on a larger-format body like the 1D/1Ds models. No EF-S here!

I will be using this for landscape, so zoom not really an issue. On ebay at the moment there are:

Vivitar 19-35 (f3.5-4.5) used for £50 - uk seller
Zenitar 16mm new for £100 - usa seller

saw a few reviews of Vivitar - saying it's about 8/10 and good 'value' lense. Any one use it here?
(I know, I know, I will do a search in a moment!!)

I have the Vivitar, I bought it when I used film, it was OK. As I'm now doing more 'pro' work I've bought the 17-40L, It's better but at a price.

Although I am holding the Vivitar, my mate has bought it from me for £85. He uses Canon consumer zooms and the Vivitar is easily as good. If you shop around you should be able to get a Vivitar or Cosina 19-35 for 80-100 GBP.

And thus my 16-35L...

Purchased the above lens with the 10D.

Wanted to see what the 10-22 could provide when I purchased the 20D (didn't purchase kit lens) and it was a truelly wideangle. If you stick out your arm straight out, it will see your elbow joint!! The 10-22 is also VERY light compared to the 16-35.

Since I utilize the lenses for skydiving photography, I found the 10-22 to be my go-to lens - IF - I'm using my 20D...
