Hi
Apart that i have 70-200 f/4 (which i believe is good for day time) want
to buy something whit more reach. As always, money is big problem so
consider that as leading point. It goes on 30D.
Thanks

I have shot offroad and tarmac rally with a 300 2.8 before and it worked really well. With a 1.4x TC was flexible to get the extra length like most of the other shooters with 400s I shot with at those events, but I could also shoot on the tighter corners.

A wide lens comes in handy too, like your 10-22 or 17-55.

How much do you want to spend. ?

1400 $...consider that i'm in Croatia and prices are higher then UK.
Sigma 100-300 f/4 is about 8400 kn which is 1400 $
300 f/4 is about 11000 kn is 1900 $...and so on
Think zoom is more practical and i'll use it during
day time period. And it's mostly for amateur which I am. But i want to have
something good.

I used to have the Sigma 100-300 f/4 when i lived on the dark side (shot Nikon) and i liked it, was pretty sharp and at f/4 realively fast....the other option is the 100-400 L....its pin sharp, but maybe not so fast on an over cast day...but then you just need to bump your iso a tad. Don't forget you are shooting with a 1.6x crop sensor so thos guys with 400mm may be shooting FF so with a 300mm you get as much reach...i havea 70-200 f/4 and i've shot Touring cars and its pretty good...ok so you cant get really tight which is a shame but its ample enough for most shots...its just balancing what you can afford, what you need it for and the results you think you can pull off...its a hard one i know...i spent a month deliberatin over what wide angle to go for and went for the 24-105 which i never contemplated at first!

Good luck!

What about the 100-400 CANON? You can get it where I live for about 1400USD

My kit when I was shooting the 40d was as follows
50mm 1.4
70-200 f4 IS
400mm f5.6
tamron 1.4 tc
This tc does not report to the camera, so you can use it even with the 400mm.

You can get an older 400mm used shipped out to you from the US. The TCs only sell for $60-80. I would spend the rest on a monopod/batteries.

If you can get a sharp copy, the 400 f5.6 can be impressive. Holds its own with the big boys ( I was using a 500 f4 before I found my copy of the 400 )
