Yes, they can be a real headache. You have to visit them, buy cute clothes for them, read to them, take them to the park, teach them to ride a bike. Do you know how much a Thomas train set costs? Sorry to have gone off topic.

Oh, I love the idea of grandkids... just with a teenage daughter (and a very good girl) the topic put a momentary scare in me. In due time (no less than 8 years I hope) I may be the one to revive this thread with a bunch of pictures of my cute... and slightly spoiled grandkids. You guys all have some cuties. And most of you don't look old enough to be "grandma" or "grandpa". Good for you.

Grandma has her brag book, but my work environment isn't good for keeping my wallet and pictures clean. For me, her pictures and story (written by her mom) exist on the web. See my home page in my profile or Google 'OEIS Complex' and look for 'Ellie'.

Thanks. She's a trooper. She goes to Riley once a week to have the expander enlarged. By late April, she will have her abdomen closed with the stretched skin.

Hi all! New here, been lurking till I came across this thread and felt this is where I could say Hi and introduce myself. My name is Cindy and I have 3 beautiful grandchildren that I take care of while my children work, here in Northwest Indiana. I am somewhat of a newbie with the camera but I get a lucky shot off every once in a while. Hopefully I will be able to capture some great shots like I have seen posted here. All I can say is cute, cute, cute.... there are some cute pictures here. Maybe I will figure out how to post pictures and share a few with you. Cindy

Hi again, trying to post again, it looks like my second attempt was better than my first. I have to say though the picture of my grand daughter seems a little on the big size. I have no idea what I did different but this time I am posting 2 more of my Jaxon. now usually the only shots I get of him (busy boy) is his backside so I threw in the lucky shot I got of him playing cowboy while his sister was a ballerina. I hope you like them, I am finding it oh so hard to take pictures of these 3, they just move so so much.
Way cool. so forget everything I said up there about my grand daughter's picture being too big, I went back and made it smaller.

hi all I can see that so many of you use the manual setting on your camera, and I am learning how to use that mode taking full control of my camera and I have to say I'm getting along quite well. Then along come my kids and their babies and back to auto and P mode i run (what a whimp I know). I will try the av mode and see where that gets me, it seems like i skipped that mode went from P to M and bypassed the Tv and Av.
oh wait are we only to share pictures here or can we chat also?

oh wait are we only to share pictures here or can we chat also?I just read a book by big, big, time pro Rick Sammon. He uses all of his modes. You aren't a whimp if you use whatever mode gets you the best results for that situation. I know we have a lot of people here who strictly use M. And there are even some who kind of look askance at anyone who doesn't use M. But they aren't you or I. If M works best for them then great.
Personally, I have try to use them all. They all have their plus and minus for the situation at hand. I love M for flash photography. But I love P for some things and I used Av on my film camera for over 20 years because that's what it had, so I use Av a lot. Tv doesn't get much of a workout. I paid for all of the modes on this camera so why limit myself to only one?

Thanks hoosierjoe, you know thats what I tell people when they ask me what mode I use. But I guess being amongst such talent here one could get a little intimidated. I like to call it the don't have time to think mode.
Here is one shot I got of my grandson when he was first born, this was taken through the glass window at the hospital that had those funny security wires (looks like chicken wire) shot. I want to say I shot it in the P mode, with my rebel xt and my 85mm lens.
I call it babies first breath-God's miracle.

Thanks for the compliment. I live 25 miles SSW of Valparaiso. Terre Haute, where Ellie lives, is usually 15 degrees warmer and they don't get the dreaded lake effect snow like we do after a storm passes.

Hi I just came across this :
1. You may attach *) maximum of two (2) photos per thread. This means: you may attach up to 2 photos when you start a new thread. You may attach additional photos if requested, but only in a reply to other member's post and request.
does this mean that I have exceeded the limit of pictures that I posted. If so should I delete 3 of them. If someone can help me out I would appreciate it.
I just read where a guy got banned and I really don't want that to happen to me so soon.
Thanks all,

Thanks all,
Open a free flickr or photobucket account to store your pictures. Then embed them in your posts. This way POTN no longer has to store your attachments. When someone views your post, the photo is pulled from the photo sharing site rather than from the POTN servers. The photo sharing sites give you the code for embeding so it's pretty easy.

I don't know why but the iso was bumped up to 1000, now I know I had to have done that, but doesn't that sound a little high. Maybe I should leave the WB in auto for a while.... It's so hard because now I have to look at crappy pictures while trying to learn... so sad... hmmmh

What camera are you using? If, for instance, it's the 40D, did you have the ISO set to auto? If so, it will select the ISO that it thinks is correct for the circumstances. I'm not sure what the WB has to do with it!
JoShAdKa4
6th of April 2009 (Mon), 12:44
Hi Roy, yes I am using the 40D. I kinda remember setting everything myself and getting all twittered when it wasn't turning out, so I may have bumped the iso up. I think I will leave the ISO and WB on auto (would that still be considered manual though...hmmh...oh well) and practice on maybe some flowers and the such. LOL maybe then I won't get so anxious.

Cindy - as I said, you'll find that, with the ISO set on auto, the camera will select the ISO that it thinks will still give you a reasonable shutter speed. This means that, in low light, it will increase the ISO to suit. So it may be that you didn't alter the ISO setting - the camera did it.

With auto ISO set in manual mode, the 40D defaults to ISO 400. She would have to have set the ISO to 1000 herself.
Cindy, nice pictures!

Most of the stitching was underneath the lip...he had more than 2 hours of platic surgery to repair a h uge gaping hole in his top lip. The last of them came out Friday night at my house. He was so happy when he woke up Sat. morning and the last knot was gone! :)

That doesn't make sense. You can't have Auto ISO set to manual mode - it's a contradiction in terms. Do you mean the exposure is set to manual?

Manual camera mode-the big "M". The camera will not shift ISO when the dial is set to M. If ISO is set to auto and you rotate the dial to M, ISO is set to 400 and stays there unless you change it. According to Cindy's EXIF, she was in manual camera mode. If her ISO was 1000, she would have had to set that herself.

Yes, as I suspected - you meant manual exposure.

From what I've read, some Nikons will shift ISO depending on parameters you set. But with a Canon, when you're in manual mode (camera, not ISO), you are really in total control.
Sorry about the hijack HoosierJoe.

Fine with me. I don't mind learning. Although I don't think the 30D has the same issues. BTW, found out my 30D had a few weeks of warranty left so I sent it in for cleaning and adjustment, and the main wheel slips a bit. All warranty covered from what I understand. So, without a camera again for a few weeks.
Keep the posts coming!

The grandparents-in-law are shuttling between Mom's house (Terre Haute) and Indy rather than staying in a hotel. Hope to visit Thursday (day off) and post a picture from Riley Thursday evening or Friday morning.

Ellie shortly after awakening early this morning at Riley Hospital. She's doing well. Food intake is good considering how tight her tummy is now and output is nominal. Mom and Dad got her on her feet and walking for the first time since surgery. We took a wagon ride through the hospital and stopped at the lounge to make a kite (one of the activities to keep the children active and to help take their minds off the pain).
