I have just received my Tamrac Expidition 4 and it looks the business. I was visualising where to put everything last night when I remembered my lens hoods (the biggest being on the 70-200 f/4L). Then I thought where the heck do I put these?

How do you over guys get lenses and hoods into one of these backpacks?

I keep them turned around on the lenses. The only one I have a problem with is the 17-40s hood, I keep this slid in the bottom.

I attached a large lens pouch to the outside of my backpack and I keep all my lens hoods in that pouch. That way it does not take so much room in the bag.

I too keep the hoods turned around on the lenses. Works for all mine.

Thanks for the replies, you guys must have bigger bags than me, cannot see how I'm gonna fit the 70-200 with turned round hood in the centre slot of the Expedition 4 without eating into the adjacent compartments! In these I need to get my 75-300 and 28-105 with hoods as well. Guess I should have gone for the Expedition 5, or 6 or 7!

There are probably hundreds of Bag/Hood threads in this forum alone. Murphy undoubtedly had a "law" for this.

Generally I see a trend going something like this.
Noobie buys his first X2000 Snaps-a-lot with a giant (for them) lens. Finds out the old Camcorder bag is too small.
Goes to local discount store and finds a cheap bag that fits his snaps-a-lot & lens.
Finds out one lens doesn't do everything. Buys "bigger" lens. No place to put it inside cheapy bag. Now he has 2 lenses, figures he's an advanced amature and deserves a "better" bag. Goes to a REAL camera store and passes out from sticker shock when he sees the price of Pro quality gear. Once revived, pawns his watch next door and buys a "pro bag" that just fits the Snaps-a-lot and his 2 lenses. A week later buys an external flash cause the built-in one can't light up a whole gymnasium.
Can ya see where this is going, folks ?

I'm 40+ years in the game and on my upteenth bag !

I have the Expedition 4 as well and when I have either the 70-200 or the 100-400 with the hood on, I can only fit my 28-135 IS, 17-35 EX (with hood) and 550EX in my bag. And it's a tight fit. Fortunately, the bag will expand sideways to accommodate things. But the Expedition 5 is not a bad idea to get more things in there. I've been contemplating getting the Expedition 5 for a while not but haven't acted on it yet. I guess I can still made do with the Expedition 4 for the time being. :)

PACACE - If you haven't figured it out. Basically you just keep buying bigger and bigger bags.

on my 24-70L the hood is just about as big as the lens... turned around backwards on the lens it works fine

Actually, that's not true in my case. I have the Tamrac Expedition 4 which works fine for me 80% of the time. I also have the LowePro Nature Trekker which allows me to carry all my gear in one bag on those occassions when I have to travel a ways or for several days. Obviously, neither is suitable for all occassions, the Nature Trekker being overkill for everyday use and the Expedition 4 being practically useless for long distance travel. What I'm missing is a bag for those 10 or so percent of the time when I need to carry more than 2 lenses and the 70-200 or the 100-400, an occassion for which the Expedition 5 would be just perfect. :D

What backpack or other type do you recommend for the Tamron 28-75, the 70-200 F4L (+hoods), 50 1.8, 18-55 kit lens, 420Ex flash, 20D, along with few batteries, cards? This is likely to be my range for some time. Would value some advice.

The Tamrac Expedition 5 will accommodate all that very nicely. With the Expedition 4, it might be a very tight fit. There's also the LowePro Mini Trekker AW but I personally wouldn't recommend it since I ended up returning it the day after I got mine.

Yeah... I got the expedition 5 and I'm not regretting it. For now, I have just the 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS & the 70-200 f/4 L. And there is a slot for each the 420EX and Pro1... but I still have 1 whole side that NEEDS to be filled :) Here's a photo of the expedition 5 with the 70-200 on the 10D with the 28-135 @ the bottom.

Heh, 80% of the time all I carry is a 17-40 and an 85 1.8. :)

Makes life so much easier. Or I swap an bring a 70-200 4 and 24 2.8. Either way light scores big points with me.

GeneMan88 - your lens hood looks alot slimmer around your 70-200mm than mine, my one flares out alot more towards the end. I'll compare your pic with my lens tonight.

My biggest problem was that by having the lens hood reversed puffed out the middle so far, I couldn't get anything either side? Can't believe there are different Canon hoods for the 70-200mm though?? In the end I had to put the hood (with a 75-300mm hood inside it) in one of the bottom corners of the bag. Then just about had room for a 50mm , 28-105mm and 75-300mm.

All those photo backpacks are too small and too expensive for me. Plus there's no room for the wine bottles. I just use a regular backpack backpack. That way I can fit in my food, stove, clothes, water, liquor, rain gear, camera, lenses, knife, map, compass, etc., etc. I have two of them. One medium for short summer trips and one larger one for winter or for multi-day trips.

I used to do that too, but I got tired of wrapping my camera gear in multiple layers of towels to keep them from getting knocked around inside the bag. I had to worry about condensation from the cold water bottle getting all over the camera gear, too, on a hot summer day.

yeah.... my hood is the ET-74, which came with the lens. i checked with b&h & they list that hood as the one that should come with the lens.

I just put a waterproof bag inside the backpack with all my camera equipment inside. And as I said, one of those small day pack style photo packs is way too small for all my stuff.

I have the Computrekker AW and everything fits with hoods except the 17-40s stupidly massive one. It sits in the front pocket.
