I am looking for a flash to learn the things.

I am geting a new Vivitar 285 Flash.

Can I use that off the camera? How can that be done?

I just got an optical slave from www.flashzebra.com for my 285hv. I'll let you know how it works in a couple hours.

I plan on using my main studio flash to set off the 285. If you plan on using the built in flash to set it off, I believe I've read that the on-camera flash on our cameras will always fire a pre-flash, which may set off the optical slave prematurely.

Your other option is to hardwire the flash to your camera.

I use PCB Cybersync's to trigger mine (trigger & receiver).
I had to modify the sync cords to plug into both but it was a piece of cake.

See http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=246797 There is a wealth of relevant info in other threads, but this sticky (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=138912) in particular is a good place to start.
