Not sure if I am in the right place if not I apologize . Here is my question I have been using the canon 40d for over a year now and am very serious about photography . I am considering taking a university course but one of the requirements is that you use a 35 mm camera not a digital .

I am interested in buying a good used 35 mm canon for the class but also I love black and white photography so would also use it for this purpose .

Any way I am looking for some sugestions on a model that has been reliable over the years and I can use for these purposes as well as possibly use some of the lens's that I have purchased for my 40d

Any help would be much appreciated

Well, the obvious choice is a Canon with EF lens mount so you can use your existing (non EF-s) lenses.

That's not what I do, because I already have a Nikon film SLR with lenses...

Welcome to the forum! I have an Elan II and it works just fine for me. Highly recommend. Or an EOS-1 that can be had for around $200.

If that's for the body only, that's way way too much. Some months ago, I bought two ElanII's on "the bay" one an Elan II and the other a IIe (eye focus) paid less than 50 bucks US for each and THEY HAD NEW BATTERIES, and both are just like new.

Here's one now:

Later, I found a local "Craigslist" EOS3 with a mid-priced Sigma 28-300mm AF lens for 150US.

There's some discussion about how in some ways the Elan II's are more desirable than the Elan 7

if you have $200, you can get a EOS 3 or Elan 7(NE)

I'd get an EOS3 or Eos1n.
With the prices they are going for, it's rather silly to get anything less IMO.

Eos5 is nice as well, since it's rather quiet. Cannot be used with IR film though.

If this is just for a single class and you don't have any intent of using the film camera (most dSLRs are also 35mm cameras), I would only look at a Rebel film camera. Get the cheapest you can.

Unlike a dSLR, the film you put in the camera is your sensor. So the cheapest film camera will take the same quality image an expensive film camera will take. Focusing is the only variable.

Plus your class may not require much out of the camera. You might have to only manual focus and use manual mode - using no automatiic features so you are forced to think and learn for everything you do instead of letting the camera do all the thinking and work for you! :)

Focusing is the only variable.

That, and user interface / handling.
So I'd definitely not get a rebel.

I want to thank everyone for the excellent advice , by the way Happy Snapper like I said I do love black and white photography and plan on using the 35mm camera for that as well as the class

I will narrow my selection over this weekend so please keep sending any advice that you have

I paid $60 for my ELAN which had the shutter serviced. I like the build quality of the ELAN models, the Rebels are just to cheap feeling (especially since all of the older 35mm were made of metal). I think for occational use any of the ELANs should be fine, if you need more features (like ETTL, more focus points etc) then look at the higher models.

I ordered an Elan from Keh this week for $30. They had two when I was looking.

I am also taking a b/w film class and wanted the cheapest way possible to use my glass.

The Elan II is a nice camera. I bought mine in 1997(ish). Haven't used it much since I purchased my XT in OCT, 2005.

There is a thumbwheel similar to the 40D you have.

Great learning tool.
