Looking for some first hand experience with this baby. I'm very interested in it primarily for slowing water for the nice silky look but have heard some complaints about patchiness due to the cross-polarization. It a lot of $$$ for a filter so I'd like to feel more comfortable before laying out the bucks.

We use these..they're top of the line, and they're cool technology too. Not sure how it works but you turn it to make it gain stops.
I think it varies 2-8ND equivalent of density.
V. good. Not very expensive if you consider it's 4 filters in one

You cannot use a polarizer in combination with the original Vari ND. Singh-Ray is coming out with a new version called the Vari ND Duo...its the same ND filter with a polarizer. I believe the new filter is already out, but only in 77mm filter size.

Does anyone sell a 5-6 stop ND filter in an 82mm ° thread?

Appreciate the feedback folks. I am open for more. Anyone encounter any difficulties with this filter? As I said, I have heard second hand (a friend of a friend type of stuff) of some problems with what i can only call patchiness due to the cross-polarization.

Can't say that I heard of this...personally, I don't shoot with one (but its next on my list). I do shoot with several pros that use the Vari ND and they have nothing but good things to say about it. Try contacting Singh-Ray through their website...the folks there are very helpful.

I use it myself for some landscape work but not really had much chance to use it because mostly do portraiture now. However it's a good bit o' kit but you still need ND filters to get the most out of it.
