They were shot together. The image behind the droplet is a red ox (which I drew - it took me forever because I have no drawing talent) on a black background (that makes the black in the droplet). What you are seeing is the refraction of all that inside the water droplet. The red surrounding in the image is from the ox.

I added the bokeh texture to the existing red background and of course the text in PS. :D
