I read the readme but it didn't help.
When I double click the icon to launch EOS Capture it launches for a quick second and then nothing. In the dock there is no icon that a new program has opened. I have my camera on, off etc but no luck.
It says it works with the Rebel XT and I'm on OS X 10.3.8.
Any ideas?
Also, the cable it came with is USB 2.0 correct? If so, what is the best way to take advantage of the USB 2.0 transfers.

What you need to do is launch EOS Capture from within DPP or EVU. It's in the Options dropdown menu. EOS Capture can't run standalone.

did you set the camera to PTP transfer in the main menu? you have to do that for the Mac to see it (I think but not sure that same is true for LINUX/UNIX).
The default is some stupid setting designed for PCs.

Its a lot simpler to use Image Capture (which is in your apps folder) to download to a designated folder. Then use whatever software you prefer for managing / editing files.

yeah i use image capture. but it doesnt work for raw files. i also wanted to see if EOS capture was faster.

It works fine for my RAW files. I wonder why it doesn't work for you?
I download to a Folder called "New Photos", using a card reader. No problems, and way faster than any other method of downloading I have tried.

Is the card reader faster than going straight from the camera?

Yes it is. I use an SanDisk 8-in-1 (cause my wife and kid have cameras which use different cards), but any USB-2 card reader will be faster. There is the added advantage that this does not use the camera battery during download.

After you plug the camera to the Mac but before you turn it on, start EVU or DPP. Then turn on the camera. I've found that if I turn on the camera first before I start the program, I always get a "camera not found" type error message.
BTW, EOS Capture is used for capturing images with the camera and transferring the images directly to the Mac or PC (referred to as shooting tethered). It's not used from transferring files from the camera card to the PC if that's what you were planning to do.
