Seems a daft question but has anyone else noticed a faint rattle from the focussing ring end of the lense when shaken slightly whilst holding the camera end ? I hope it is paranoia on my part
due to the value of these lenses ?

Are you referring to the 70-200/f4L ?? If so, then no, there is no rattle with my lens.

I hope mine is ok , seams to work ok but a definate rattle from the focus ring area . Can u suggest any tests i can do to check it ? Oh by the way i have noticed when i adjust the focus manually the ring keeps turning when the little dial gets to one end or the other .

My 70-200 F4L is solid, no rattles at all.

I don't know about any tests ... but I'm quite certain an L lens shouldn't rattle. Is the rattle with or without the hood in place? Is it new enough that you can return and exchange?
I don't have my lens available to check, but I'm fairly certain that it's normal for the focus ring to continue turning beyond the minimum or infinity focus settings.

Yes, I have a small noise from the focus ring of my 70-200 f4L and it does keep turning as you state. I can lightly grip the ring and push forward and backward and hear that there is some clearance (lack of fit) in the ring. I check the 17-40 f4L and it also keeps turning as if it has a "clutch". It has no noise or clearance issue though.
ETA I took the hood and the polarizing filter off to make sure those weren't an issue. I'll have to check with the Service Center when I pick up my flash to see if it's an issue and whether it affects anything. I've taken few pictures with it lately so no opinion.

Thanks guys i feel better for talking to you all , ok there is a little noise when the focus is on the infinity setting rather than the other end of the focus scale but it focus,s so fast it is scary that is on 70 and 200 as well as the 1.2 and 3 mtr settings . Maybe i got one with a minimal amount of play in the focus part it still works really well . My only lense before this was the 75 - 300 usm that would waggle from side to side without affecting the lense ! On a foot note when i used it today as good as it is i could feel the focus part moving through the camera , my 75 - 300 was very smooth and quiet , very slow but smooth ?
